Why do I even bother anymore?

Nurses HIPAA

Published

So lately there have been a couple of threads on reddit of nursing posing in their scrubs, at work and obviously on the clock. I've tried to let them know that while it's not a HIPAA violation it could be violating their hospitals social media policy and to be careful. And what response do I get? Oh you're a killjoy, mind your own business, there's nothing wrong with this, and you suck. Real mature response from other nurses.

So I guess no more trying to help out my fellow nurses. Hell I checked out one posters previous posts and she had even taken a picture of her pts aborted twin at 20 weeks. All in the name of fake internet posts. Some people make me sick to my stomach.

I would actually report the pictures of the aborted twins if possible. That is disgusting behavior and worthy of having one's license revoked, in my opinion.[/quote']

That actually made me sick to my stomach, it was so wrong on so many levels it truly disgusted me.

Not all hospitals have strict policies though. One hospital I've been at had a strict no photos whatsoever policy. My current one though is not so strict. No pictures of patients - period. Family can't take any although I'm sure it's different on certain units (L&D for example). My friends and I have taken pictures together at work, although it's typically in the break room. They aren't unprofessional and there's never any patients, charts, or boards in it. I'm sure some people might appreciate the warning, but you don't know what their hospital's policy is either. Although the people stupid enough to post pictures of patients or visitors are probably beyond help.[/quote']

It's true I don't know their policies which is why I try to phrase it that way. Most people think if HIPAA isn't involved they can post whatever they want. All the hospitals in my area all basically say the same thing: no pictures while on the clock regardless of content, no posting to social media while on the clock, and if you have the hospital listed as your employer everything is a reflection of them and up for scrutiny.

I usually just tell people that their post maybe against their hospitals social media policy and to CYA.

Never heard of that site before i need to socialize more on the internet. anyhoo, i completely agree with the OP. i used to work with a nurse that was constantly updating herself on facebook or instagram i think, doing NOTHING! taking pic's posing at the nurses station even with patients charts in the background. dont think she even realized their charts with their names showing were in her snap shots. a huge violation of pt's right to privacy.

No good deed goes unpunished. Let these chuckleheads sink themselves.

I think what some members may be trying to convey, OP, is that just like any other potential violation of an employer's policies ... it just isn't your business. If someone is doing something that is a threat to patient safety or is illegal -- that's one thing. But it isn't up to you to police other people's work performance.

But we do that all the time, here, fb, reddit, and other social media boards. What's the difference? You post something in a public forum you open yourself up to criticism of your actions. I don't think I'm policing them by letting them know that this may be a violation of their hospitals policy. As I've said people think if it's not HIPAA related they can post whatever they want. I would hate for any nurse to get blindsided, which is why I give them a heads up.

Okay - lets keep it civil. While we encourage lively debate, we draw the line at personal attacks....

I never ever post anything about work on Facebook. It gives me the shudders when I hear about people who get fired for posting stuff about their job on fb. That can happen to anyone not just nurses.:banghead:

Yep and so much of it is honestly who your friends are. You ****** someone off this week and have posted work stuff, they will screenshot it and send it to hr. I don't mention anything, literally not anything, about work. I'll text my friends and vent that way. Even when I have super juicy lost cucumbers in the rectum stories!!!
