Passed the Hesi for GCC Az.

Nursing Students HESI

Published

So I passed the Hesi!!!!! I'm so happy I could cry......actually I did cry! Everyone's advice on here was so helpful that I thought I would provide some information about my testing experience. First some background: I am applying for the nursing program at Glendale Community College in Glendale, Az. I took the hesi at the Rio Communiversity in Surprise. Its great there because it is usually empty and until the day I tested I've never had an issue. My issue almost made me have a heart attack. I took the math portion first because a lot of people said to face my fears head on. After completing the math portion and moving on to the reading my computer froze but the timer kept going! It was the scariest and most nerve wracking thing I think I have ever been through. The proctor at Rio had to call evolve and have my test reset after calling IT and getting my computer to work........an hour later I was given the minutes I lost and was able to keep going. I think this plus the fact that I was so frustrated made me want to speed through the rest of the test just to get out of there. All in all I'm very happy with my results.

My scores: Math: 92%

My advice: brush up on fractions, decimals, basic algebra, ratios and proportions, household measurements and conversions, and general math (adding, subtracting, multiplying, division).

Language composite score: 89%

Breakdown of language composite score:

Grammar: 86%

My advice: study the grammar section of the hesi study guide.

Vocabulary: 92%

My advice: study the words from the hesi study guide in the vocab section as well as the words from the a&p section. The A&P section is not a requirement at my school, but I read that a lot of words from both sections were included, and they were!!!

Reasding comprehension: 89%

My advice: test yourself on implications, conclusions, understanding on the material you read and meaning/word use.

Critical thinking and personality tests there is no studying for, just answer honestly and use common sense.

I have created a bunch of flashcards on quizlet that helped me a ton. There is an app for phones and tablets to make it easier to study them. These helped me a ton. Especially with the vocab. They have cool games and quizzes that will help with learning the words!!

Sorry this post is long, but I'm hoping to help someone just as some of you helped me!!!! Can't wait to drop off my application!! Good luck to those of you waiting to take the test!!!!!! :)

Congratulations. Can you post any links you used for the grammar/reading comphrension section?

Passed! Thanks cami9273 for your info and study prep. The math was the hardest part for me, but made it through. The flash cards for the terms you made really helped. Thanks again!

AWESOME!!! e_mac682 Congratulations!! I'm glad the tools I gave you helped.

Congratulations on your scores!!! I recently applied to my nursing program, but didn't get in because my Hesi score was to low ( I scored an 80) which is decent, but not competitive. I read your post and have a few questions. I looked at your vocab list and it looks like those words came from the study guide, but were you asked any of these words? When I tested I barely asked any. Also for math did you memorize the conversions or anything, or did you only do the book?

Yes, some of mine were on there. But as I stated a lot of them came from the A&P section. So you have to study those as well. Sorry about the nursing program, hopefully when you reapply you will get in. I memorized a lot of conversions and did a lot of practice on the book and websites. Conversions and ratios are the most important things on the test I had. It seemed like the majority of the test was that. If you have any more questions let me know. Sorry it took so long to respond but I never got a notification that you replied!!

Congratulations. Can you post any links you used for the grammar/reading comphrension section?

Unfortunately I didn't really study for that part because I read all the time and grammar and reading are my strong points. I did take the test in the hesi book several times before I tested to make sure I had it.
