My knees are killing me!

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Hi everyone. I am a new staff nurse and have been doing 3-12's since Feb. I work days 7-7:30 pm.

My problem is that my knees start to ache/hurt at about 2 pm. I bought a new pair of shoes, New Balance 927, and that has not helped at all.

I also started working out again to strengthen my leg muslces.

My knees don't hurt when I'm not working.

Is it about finding the right shoes?

Is knee pain just inherent in the job?

Is is that I just need to get used to walking on concrete floors?

Any advice?

Thanks!

JM try the shoes "On the Clock" by Reebok. I developed tendonitis in my right heel during nursing school. I tried New Balance shoes because everyone recommended them. In all actuality they seemed to make it worse. Someone told me to try the Reeboks and my foot began to get better almost immediately. I love these shoes. In fact I just bought two more pair lol.

Good luck and hope your knees feel better! Have a great day! :)

Thank you Pegasus65! I will look into them!

I liked my New Balance shows but found that I needed to also have arch supports in them as well. My new favorite brand are Puma shoes but everyone is different lol.

look at how much you weigh~ i hear that excess weight can wreck havoc on your knees.

Hi PlaneJanie77 - weight isn't the issue. Im not overweight. I think I just need to keep trying to find shoes that work for me. I just hate the thought of buying shoe after shoe until I find the right one.

Try the Reeboks JM.... you can get them from Penney's fairly cheap!

Have a great day!

I personally like Danskos because they have great arch support. My feet used to hurt working 12 hour shifts before I got these shoes.I also had a friend who's knees hurt after hiking and was told his hiking days may be over. However, he got a second opinion and all he needed was orthotics. He put this insert into his boot and now has no problems with his knees! Perhaps that's all you need!

If you go to a specialty shoe store, they will often have done the shopping for you to find excellent brands. They tend to also have a really good return policy as their reputation is based on getting people into individualized proper footwear.

Personally, I found most shoes very uncomfortable until I was properly assessed and found to have high arches. They gave me a really good insole and my feet are very happy now :)

I don't know that they do what they claim, but the Sketchers Shape-ups are very comfy. I'm usually a Dansko girl and wanted something different this time around; I've had no problems with my knees or back with these shoes.
