12 hour Shifts

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Hey everyone !

So i need some advice I'm currently a secretary but i am going to school for nursing ( just in my prerequisites so far). Anyways i got A job working 3 12 hours shifts a week to make it easier to go to school and work. Well my job is actually 84 hours in a pay period instead of 72 and the way the schedule works is one week i work M W TH S SUN then the next week i work T F. . . I feel So burnt out and i never Get more then two days off in a row unlike my other job i worked That was 3 12s where i could make our schedule so i would Get at least 3 or 4 days off... this whole extra 12 hours is throwing me around.... anyone have any suggestions for a schedule to make this work better instead of 5 12s one week and 2 the next... also our pay period ends on a Thursday .... so it goes Friday -Thursday which throws everything off as well

Your schedule is F-M-W, then Th-Sa-Su-Tu. Do you have to have to cover each day of the week in your 2-week period? Why are you working 7 days in a two week period? Are you getting 4 hrs overtime each pay period (84 hr pay period) or 8 hrs overtime (48 hrs in week 1)?

Like this week is my weekend to work and i work Monday Wednesday Thursday Saturday Sunday then the next week i work Tuesday Friday. There's two secretaries and they want every day covered. I only Get overtime for the 4 hours.

You might as well think of your workweek as noted above -- you work Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday this week. Four shifts. Next week, you work Friday, Monday and Wednesday. Three shifts. And you do get overtime for the 4 hours over 80 in a two week period. It's not an ideal schedule in my eyes, but I know plenty of folks who work night shift schedules like that to avoid the necessity for child care. (I'm not sure how they avoid the necessity for sleep.)

Talk to the other secretary and see if you two can work something out between you. As long as the shifts are covered, your boss ought to be OK with it.

start on Monday- work 3 on, 3 off, 4 on, 4 off. You will work every other weekend but always have Thursday and Friday off. I doubt that will fit with a school schedule, but it is less crazy. Good luck.
