My goal is to have a BSN and go AD in 2014. What is Walter Reed like? Can one live at Fort Bevoir and work there?

Specializes in EMT, ER, Homehealth, OR.

Walter Reed will be closed by then. The 2 military hospitals in the area will be Ft. Belvoir & Bethesa. Bethesa will be a joint Army & Navy hospital vs a Naval Hospital as it is now.

So if I join as a BSN-RN in the Arrmy I can list Bethesda as one of my top three? It's there, Womack, BAMC and where else?

I believe that in 2014 you would be able to from what I understand, I could be wrong thou. There is a total of 8 Army Medical centers that new grads can list. Off the top of my head I could not tell you all of them, but one of them is Magidan at Ft. Lewis WA.

Specializes in Advanced Practice, Home Care, Med-Surg,.

According to my "Army Health Care Team, New Officer's Overview" book, the top 8 are/where

WBAMC- Ft. Bliss, TX

BAMC- Ft Sam Houston, TX

Eisenhower- Ft Gordon, TX

Landstuhl- Germany

Womack- Ft Bragg, NC

Walter Reed- DC

Madigan- Ft Lewis, Wash

Tripler- Hawaii

Specializes in SICU, CSICU.

Fort Gordon is in Georgia

lol.....actually Bethesda will be a true tri-service hospital with some continued training with the USPHS. So Bethesda is going to have AF, Army and Navy all assigned there.

If one ends up in Bethesda, where does she normally live? Where is the closest post housing?

Most officers live off base using their basic allowance for housing. Here is the link for BAH. http://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/perdiem/bah.html BAH is tax free, but this area of the country is pretty much one of the most expensive to live in. Most people stationed here will drive an hour or more just to get a decent affordable house, because this area is so expensive. I definitively wouldn't pick this area unless you just like the DC area, the traffic sucks (2nd worst in the nation behind LA). http://dc.about.com/od/communities/a/LivinginDC.htm

Not to mention the parking at Bethesda is going to be ridiculous!!!! They have built several new buildings with very little thought to how much traffic is actually going to increase when WRAMC and NNMC combine.

Who will be the biggest in that area - Bethesda?

When WRAMC and NNMC/Bethesda combine it is probably going to be the biggest military hospital on the East Coast.
