A non-select AF NTP applicant wondering if there is a need for Air Force OR nurses?

I was wondering if the Air Force is in need of OR nurses. I was not picked up for NTP this last board. When I told my recruiter I had done my practicum in the OR, he said to get 6 months experience in the OR and reapply. Is there a shortage of OR nurses in the Air Force? Also, will it be hard to be picked up after being a non-select? My recruiter said I didn't have anything wrong with my package, just that there were so few positions open. I'm wondering if this will hurt my chances later.

OR has more qualifications needed than other specialties to be selected by the Air Force. You should consult your AF Nurse recruiter to get these standards. There are more OR slots available this year and in previous years. Best of luck.

FWIW A lot of the AF budget has moved away from the NTP program towards aquiring fully qualified nurses. I would get the 6 months experience and apply again for the fully qualified board. I don't think that non-select will hurt your chances at all either...especially considering the current economic climate. For a lot of new nurses with little to no experience the best place to start is in med-surg.

Fully qualified with a OR course and experience is the short answer. We have an internal transtion program but it's highly selective , very competitive, and reserved for folks currently fully qualified N3s with expereince and TOS. A civilian new nurse looking for the OR should have experience and a CNOR from AORN.
