Navy Corpsman Seeks to Challenge NCLEX in NY

I recently got discharged from the navy and know that in california you can challenge the nclex as a Navy Corpsman. And I've been looking everywhere and i can't find anywhere, if you can do the same in the state of NY . I was wondering if anyone out there would know, and if you can point me in the right direction of finding out. Any and all help will be appreciated.

Also, it was asked before... So i'll just post a bit of my experiance. I have vast experiance in the medical field. I hated the idea of being a desk corpsman so i just jumped in on patient care. I had 9 months of experiance on a med surge ward, and another 1 and a half years working in the ER and ICU. (since icu would'nt have their own corpsman, when they had icu patients they would call an er corpsman to come up) Then 3 more years of being an EMS Corpsman riding ambulances at a fire station, then 1 more year line corpsman duty in iraq with a CAAT plattoon. (we hunted enemy tanks) and then worked in ER's in california for 7 more months. Overall I would have to say i've been in the med field practicing patient care well over 7 years. (leaving out other positions to save time) I'm not trying to brag, but i feel that I'm more than competant to challenge the boards. Because in going through nursing class's, I feel would be a waste of time and money. I'm sure there are always new pointers I can pick up, but would rather just take the test and start working immediatly. I've still been looking online for possible locations to find the answer to my question with no luck. Anyone else out there with possible suggestions :stone ????? Thank you in advance.

Respectfully,

Sorry Guys, not here in Ohio. I cannot even endorsed my licensed from california to ohio because I did not graduate in an LPN school. With 21 years of experience behind me. The law states that you have to graduate in a credited state school. There's no exception!

Thanks,

I am a former Corpsman from Upstate NY and I am currently submitting my paperwork to apply for my LPN licence using my Navy training. I had to get a Form 2EQ completed by the Command Career Counselor stating the dates I went to Corpsman A School and FMSS School and have it notorized. I'm submitting it to NYS with a copy of my SMART transcript. I didn't see mention of that on the NYS website, but I was told that it wouldn't hurt to submit it with my application and check. Of course I also have to submit the NYS Nurse Form 1 along with the form 2 EQ.

I'll post an update when I have more info.

CA, NY and WVA grant licenses...one can work in those states. However, license not recognized via reciprocity in many states due to several having regs requiring one to GRADUATE from a state approved NURSING program as part of BON state laws. Catch 22 situation.

Thank you Karen. I can't wait to get this application in and get on the road to licensure. I'm not worried about moving with a licence because NY is my home state and next week when I get home I'm applying for my BSN. My LPN is just to help me get a job to get me by while in school.

Hello Navy Corpsman--I was an Air Force medic--that did exactly what you are trying to do. It took a while for the paperwork to go through--but I was able to take the NCLEX-PN--failed it the first time (mainly because there were a lot of medication questions--and AF didn't allow medics to give them). But, passed the second time--I have never been to NY. I was not able to transfer my LPN to several states--because they didn't accept the military as an accredited education (makes no sense to me--best experience ever). I worked at the VA inpat pysch unit part time while going through my BSN program. It was a good job while going through school. It was a rough go at first--with giving out meds--but after a couple months--I was up and running. I was able to get into a BSN program quicker because they held a certain number of slots for LPN-->BSN. Your classmates will no doubt come to you for advice..but watch out for the exams--because you will have to reprogram so that you think like the book--and not "real life". It was a good stepping stone--getting my LPN along the way--good luck with it.

Thanks for your input Sherry. :)

For anyone from NEW YORK. I submitted the recommended paper to the NYS Education Department/Div of Professional Licensure. The form dealing with military training has to be signed by a military member attesting to your military training and then stamped with the military seal.

I received a pkg from them today with the application to take the NYCLA-LPN exam and instructions on what to do after I take the exam. So, I submitted $130 with the first package to apply and it will cost $200 to take the NYCLEX exam. I'll update everyone when I'm licenced.

Did everything work out for your LPN certification? I am looking into doing the same thing as you did, so I would just like to make sure that everything turned out well. Thank you for your help and research!

Corpman are able in some states to challenge the NCLEX-PN. I've never heard of anyone being able to challenge the NCLEX-RN. Good Luck

Ditto. You can easily challenge the PN. And EC will accept you into their nursing program based on your experience, no questions asked , as they did me on my past AF medic (corpsman) experience.

But I'll have to tell you...even though initially I thought WHY do I have to go through all this, I learned soooooooooooooooooooo much going through the academics of it all... and I'm so glad I did!

Hands on in the military is awesome and we do a LOT, this is true, but the book learning as to the WHY's we do what we do, and the intricacies of the physiology, the meds, the endless EVERYTHING you will learn in school... there's just no replacing that, no substituting that! You learn so much about the WHY's, not just the HOW's. Invaluable.

I wish you the best in your persuit, and remember.. once an LPN, you can always fast track or bridge to RN !

HAPPY VETERAN'S DAY.. and THANK YOU ! :)

I know its been a while since you have written in. What happened with your LPN exam did you take it?

I have some questions for you. I too was a hospital corpsman and would like to challenge my LPN. When I separated (honorably) I was an HM3/8404. Are these stats similar to yours? I would hate to pay the $135.00 and be denied.

PS: I also live in Upstate NY (Latham)...its starting to get cold!!!!

I was denied. Come to find out NY State doesn't recognize the Navy Corpsman Program as suitable training for their LPN Licensure guidelines. They do accecpt Army and Air Force. Not to offend anyone else on the site, but Navy 8404 Corpsman have a lot better reputation stemming around their education and experience than any other service does. So, don't waste your $135.

Did you serve in the Gulf? Do you have any Campaign Medals? Email me. I may have some other education info for you that may help.

Michelle

Thanks. Michelle. I sent you an email.

I got approved for LPN in West Virginia, although I am not going to practice there, I am eligible to work at any military hospital in any state or overseas. I was a corpsman with 8 years experience. Thats crazy about NY only accepting Army and Air Force when I know Air Force medics experience doesnt come close to ours and well heck I have trained Army medics too.
