Just Got Denied at VA for New Grad Program

Just got a letter from the VA saying I was not selected for an RN-New Grad program. I was found "qualified for the position" but not "the most qualified". Seriously I am ******, I am an actual veteran of the Iraq war. I have the 10 extra points for being a veteran and a service connected. I was also told the VA was on a directive to hire more veterans into their ranks.

How in the hell did I not get selected! There aren't many 6-Month RN new grads with my background. I swear, I am so angry right now! I want to know what kinds of people they selected.

I have an ADN, but the 10 points would have made up the difference. I am so ******! Honestly it is insulting! Especially for an organization that prides itself on being " A Veteran Friendly Employer".

Hey fellow vet! I hear you. You're frustrated. You busted you butt serving your country and you feel smacked in the face by the very organization that should rolling out the red carpet for you (and they should for all vets). It Stinks!! A bunch of us have been there or still there. Take a deep breath, the rejection wasn't personal. I'm betting they used a rubric or some type of score card system. Points for BSN, Deans list, NSNA membership, externships. The competition for entry level nursing jobs is very fierce very these days. You made it through the screen process and to the interview stage so your application is solid. You have nothing to be ashamed of. Keep pushing on.

Really? Getting blown up in your tank? Try getting out and kicking down some doors and then maybe you'll have room to talk. Go talk to a green side Navy Corpsman and see how much respect they deserve.

As others have said, the Veterans preference only applies to your application, not for actually getting the job. Go get your BSN and try again.

Wow, talk about citing the 0.001% to make a point.

Sounds like TS was just upset at the prospect at a non-combat reservist being picked above a combat vet. Sounds reasonable tbh

First I feel 100% sure that NG and Reservist are inferior to AD component any day of the week. A reservist soldier is inferior to an AD soldier within the same MOS. Ill put down all I have in savings that pound for pound the AD Joe, will kick more ass. The day in day out of PT at 0600/ minimum 10 day monthly field problems/ weapons training&maintenance/ and opportunity for tactical training on a daily basis will produce a far superior soldier.

Btw, I realize many AD component go to reserve or NG. Its a whole lot easier than AD life. You have more time with your kids and actually get a job that is not dependent on the military. You already have one foot out the door so to say. Which is no problem, they did their 4 years and now want to take it easy. Those AD guys deserve a break and some peace. AD life is way hard.

But let us be real, those reservist and NG that never did their AD stint before leaving for princess land, do not have the same level of skill as the ex-AD guys.

Been with the NG and reserve guys on missions in Fort Erwin, my impression is that they are completely cacked, they crashed an up-armor into my 114. My experience with them in Iraq, is that they are completely cacked up. They shot on me and my guys on the roof of the IP station and confused an Abrams with a Bradley.

So yeah! I am definitely justified in my opinion of these idiots. Almost died because they were trigger happy!

How about you get out of here with your attitude? The reserves and guard have deployed just as much the last 10 years as AD while holding down a regular "real" job. I have seen reserve and guard units wipe the floor with AD units during training exercises. Bunch of weekend warriors eh?

In fact the last unit I trained with was a sad sack AD armor unit, hmmmm. In fact most of the crappy soldiers I have met were AD. A few even tried the civvy world but ran back in because they didn't think they could make it.

Calm your jets, reapply or look somewhere else. We have all been rejected from places where we thought we were shoe ins. For me this has occurred IN and OUTSIDE of the military. It happens...

One historical note, what division took the brunt of the German resistance at Normandy (Omaha) on D-Day? The 29th Infantry Division...a National Guard Division from the East Coast....

Things have changed since WWII. I was not even alive back then. I am talking about the here and now. Look at the quality of soldier now.

As for saying "In fact most of the crappy soldiers I have met were AD", then report them. We cant have AD acting like reserve or NG component.

Hey folks ease up! Active or reserve we all take the same oath and wear the same uniform. Bullets don't discriminate!

At this point, this has veered off so far that it is not salvageable.

To the OP: We are not going to debate the AD vs NG/reservist. That is for a different forum.

Best wishes for future opportunities
