Can a military nurse stateside take college class?

Hi all,

I've posted before about my interest in military nursing (specifically the Navy0 after I get my degree.

Of course I know that all military folks get deployed and that certainly doesn't bother me. With us being chin deep in conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq deployment is a likely possibility.

Still I won't graduate nursing school for at least another 2 years. Of course, no one can predict the future and more conflict (Iran, N. Korea) is possible.

Anyhoo, can a non-deployed (is that the term?) nurse who is on active duty and stationed in stateside enroll in college? I know they neeed permission to work outside of their duty assignment, but do they need permission to enroll in college classes leading to a Medical Microbiology degree or Master's in Public health courses? I'd be in no hurry to finish. I'd just like to take a class or two.

As long as it does not get interfer or conflict with your military obligation or duties as an officer, is it okay??

(I've talked to a healthcare recuiter, but I really don't wanna call him back because I became kind of a pest peppering him with questions!...:lol2: CORVETTE GUY , HELP!)

I can speak for the Air Force because that is what branch I am in and yes you can take classes and they pay for 100% up to so much per credit hour and 4500 a year (the last I have heard) I took all of my pre-req's and I didn't pay much (when I first started it was 75%) but that was still pennies comparatively. The air force encourages their members to go to school. I am sure the navy does as well but don't quote me on that because I am not exactly sure. And you can take any class in any format as long as it is accredited I have taken classes in the desert by telecourse, online, in class so even if you are deployed (depending on where you were) there is still a possiblity of taking classes especially if they are online. And if you are deployed and taking them online (from my experience) most instructors will work with you. :-) I took two classes in Saudi Arabia. They had some instructors that came there in tours and taught classes they had the books and everything. I even clepped courses while I was there. So there should be opportunities for you! I hope this helps and gives you some type of general idea.

LOL, any good Army Health Care Recruiter should not mind answering your questions... no matter how often, or how many questions.

To the best of my knowledge, an active duty Army Nurse Corps Officer not in theater [not OCONUS] can enroll in college courses. Plus, if PCS OCONUS [not deployed w/CSH] you could still enroll in college courses. Be advised, it would be wise to check with Chain of Command regards to any possible conflicts between work schedule & college course schedule. Otherwise, educational growth is encouraged in the Army Nurse Corps.

Actually, not all do.

Huh? Please clarify.

BTW, do you have a relative in the USMC PCS to Camp Pendleton, CA?

He said "I know all military folks get deployed" and I said "Not all do" as in not all military folks get deployed.

LOL, your still not answering my question. :lol2:

IMHO, all active duty military service members get deployed [serve OCONUS] sooner or later IF they choose to make it a 20 yr career. True, some will deploy more frequently than others based on MOS/AOC.

Ohhhh sorry I didn't realize he was talking about those that are in for 20 yrs. In that case yes I'm sure pretty much all do get deployed LOL

Please, I'm curious as to which specific MOS/AOC active duty slots NEVER deploy?

I MEANT not all people deploy...my husband's brother for example was in the Navy for either 4 or 6 yrs (can't remember) and he was never deployed.

I also have a friend who has been in for 4 years and has never been deployed. She does office work.
