BOLC June 2014

Hello all! I have been browsing threads to see who's headed for BOLC 2014 possibly June. No orders yet. Still waiting for the "phone call", my recruiter says it may take "2 weeks to 2 mos". I was commissioned (took an oath) Jan, 14th :). HOOAH! Also, are you going to Pre-BOLC? I am interested, I mentioned it to my recruiter and he just dismissed me. No prior military background/experience. I have been an RN for nearly 3 years. Currently working at a 25 bed Critical Access Hospital as a M/S Nurse. Still working on my APFT.

I have no intentions of keeping her away from her father. I am aware that it is important for her to have a positive relationship with her father. I have been in the military for 8 years and I know how leadership feels about issues with childcare and single parents. I just wanted the perspective of someone actually working in the nursing field in the army and how they are doing it. Thanks for your reply pulsenessNine. We have agreed on custody and right now he is not stable and she will be with a family member while I am at BOLC.

I did not mean to imply that you would do anything less. I'm sorry if I caused you to feel that way.

Hi 504 Medic,

I'm taking my training to the next level, and taking your advice to do yoga next week. Sidewalks are all clear now from the snow, so it's a good time to put my treadmill training into the test :). I have time to get my mind and body ready for this and my heart is into it, according to my RFO I am not going until Aug 10 for prep-BOLC.

On the other hand, I got my official orders and it only say that I will be going on Aug 24th for BOLC. Which by the way, I have to decipher every word of it! I email HRC already but no response yet, my recruiter has no idea either. I like to keep it cool, but I guess deep within me, I am freaking out. :(.

Excellent. As you train, if you don't have a history of running, try converting to the POSE running form (http://www.posetech.com/library/dr-02-05-007.html ). Start slowly, 1/4 of your normal distance, and build up from there. It is a great deal friendlier on your joints than traditional heel-toe running, and the higher foot speed required for POSE will lead itself to better cardio results, making you much faster when it comes time to perform on the APFT. You'll be taking a lot of them, so life is much nicer when you look forward to PT tests...rather than dread having to get back in shape to pass.

If possible, run on grass or dirt trails. Pavement is very unforgiving on your feet and joints...my post workout recovery is a much longer when ever I run on the road.

Being in the Army has been a darn fine excuse to eat healthy, treat my body right, and stay in the best shape of my life (I played 4 sports a year in high school, active though out college, etc, but I'm in much, much better condition now than I ever was in my teens or twenties, thanks to Uncle Sam.)

Hi 504 Medic,

I had a great run/jog today! I was able to do 2.5 miles with minimal (few stops) difficulty. You are right, running on the grass feels better on your feet/joints than running on the pavements. As a nurse, being on our feet all day is very tough, I just hope that I could keep up running within the next 8 years with no joints problem or surgery. You're right taking care of our body is our best bet! I look forward of serving my new adopted country longer than my initial contract says. CHEERS!

I just graduated and passed my NCLEX on June 24. I am currently waiting for orders for BOLC and CNTP assignment. I really hope that I can get in for August BOLC. I have 15 years of service (2 of them spent in nursing school) I did the program through the AECP. If there are any ACEP folks on here, how long did it take to get your orders for BOLC and did you get your first choice assignment? I am hoping to get WRNMMC. I heard from HR that a lot of soldiers do not request that as their top, so I may get it. The DC area is expensive, the parking at the hospital is non-existent, and the traffic is a nightmare, but it is home and I own my house here. I really don't want to deal with having to sell it and it is 75% rehabbed, so it can't even be rented out. I also spent my summer between junior and senior year doing a residency and participated in part of the CNTP orientation at the facility.

I was also curious about the car situation at BOLC. My car is a piece of crap so I do not trust it for a 1600 mile trek. Would I be okay buying a cheap bicycle to get around post? How easy is it to take cabs into town? I also understand there is a car rental location on post.

Taxis are plentiful on/around Ft. Sam. A bicycle would probably work, or just make friends with classmates with cars. :)

Haha...just like high school. :D

Dccubano I got my orders 1day after I received my nursing license number. I am also AECP. You may end up in the July class....I hear the august one is full.

I am fine with July. It just gives me less time to prep and get all my stuff together. I have put leave in through Aug. 21. I really did not feel like attaching anywhere for busy work. If I have to wait until October then I may try to get placed at my old duty station or with the Aberdeen band. Have fun at BOLC and maybe I will see you there.

Hi Dccubano,

Congratz! I did not get any of my choice assignment. Tripler, BAMC, WRAMC. I have 1.5years of M/S experience. HR told me that, at that time, they do not have available authorization on these locations, since, these are all CNTP sites for brand new BSN grads, you might have a better luck then since you are in the program. After 2 year time on a station you can work to get to duty station you prefer.

Goodluck!

PS. I will be reporting early to FT Sam Aug. 10 for the prep-BOLC :), I am very excited!
