Anyone in nursing school now looking to join army or airforce active duty in 2010

Hi everyone! my name is Renee and I am about 80% sure that army nursing is for me. I'm currently in nursing school and set to graduate May 2010 and am craving something different in my life along with being able to work in my career and travel. The army is sticking out to me because of the 1 year long nurse residency program, the highest amt of loan repay, the locations of the medical centers, and of course all of the other perks of the military, including giving back to my country. I have an appt with a healthcare recruiter on Tuesday and will go with a list of questions... I also am going to talk with an Air Force recruiter as well just to see if I am set on the Army. Is anyone else in my position? I would love to hear from anyone who is thinking what I am thinking especially with the same time frame... Hope to hear from you!

I am in the same position as you are, but I am leaning towards Air Force as opposed to the Navy and the Army. : )

I have talked briefly to just a normal AF recruiter and plan on talking to a nurse recruiter either next weekend or this summer.

The one year residency - from my understanding - will likely not continue.. and was only available to a small initial test group of nurses.

That being said you still (and they always have) provided training and what not on your first duty location... it's just not a formal '1 year residency' followed by a duty station.. it is go to your duty station, get your orientation based on your dept and your skill level. I wouldn't let the lack of the residency or the idea of the residency program persuade/repel you that much either way - you will still get your orientation go get on your feet and able to establish a course guarantee for one of four specialty areas - so after a few years on your initial assignment you can know what your future holds.

hey, where did you get the info from about the residency ending?

Where did you see it advertised that the residency was occurring? They did the initial run earlier this year... and it is not feasible. A year of training for nurses that have a turnover rate (as many young officers do...) where they could be working under a command. Talk to you recruiter about it and see what they say.

I was really intrigued by this as well... but as time went I realized I would be part of a unit whom would provide an informal 'residency' where I'd get my feet wet and up to speed.

I don't have anything official for you.. but I don't think you will find much on being offered the residency. Let me know what you find out ;)
