Any FNP/ ACNP Navy Nurses?

Hello everyone!

This is my first post... so if I'm way off let me know.

A little bit about me, I'm prior service active duty AF, about one year away from finishing an FNP program, with student loans amounting to what a nice 3-4 bedroom fixer upper would cost. I've always had the thought to go back to active linger in the back of my mind but there is a lot to consider.

Basically my question is for any Navy ACNP out there

Can you tell me what your typical day is like? What kind of shifts (12's - 8's)? Where do NP's typically get stationed? Did you get mentorship as a new grad? Deployments? Student loan repayment/bonuses? Extra medical training opportunities? Is there an on call requirement?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!

Is your program a DNP? I believe the military is moving toward DNP for FNPs. Not sure that ACNPs are accepted/utilized, it's usually FNP, peds, psych, and women's health. You should speak with a recruiter for the latest info — the dollars are dwindling and the services are downsizing. I wouldn't count on loan repayment.

It's an MSN program unfortunately. The goal would be to eventually get a DNP on the Navy's dime if I join. That's very true, loan repayment used to be the norm back in the day, today its almost non-existent. I'm waiting to get a call back from the recruiter, but I learned the hard way they like to "bend the truth" a little bit. I'll definitely check out your articles, thanks for the reply!

The AF utilizes active duty acute care NPs. I currently work with one. There just aren't very many slots.

I'm leaning more towards the navy since most of their bases are located on the coast. Can you tell me a little bit about the work schedule/routine of the AF FNP you work with?

He works 730-1630 M-F. He essentially serves as a rounding hospitalist.

Thanks for your response jfratian! I just spoke to a Navy recruiter and he told me that right now they're not commissioning any FNP's in AD or Reserves... So if I end up joining AF it is!
