Hi! Thanks for offering! Today is actually the first day I've ever thought about military nursing. I am currently going through my nursing school clinicals at the VA and my nurse today was lamenting to me about how she wishes she had joined the military as a nurse. The way she described it, it sounds like there are a lot of great opportunities (traveling, pay, etc). I still have a lot of research to do but for the first time I am seriously considering it as a career path. Could you please tell me a little bit about the process to become a navy nurse and what types of job duties they typically perform. If you have any opinion on the pros and cons that would be incredible helpful too. I'm especially looking to hear from someone with experience in the field to hear how they like it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! :)

I have a question as well. I am currently in the process of applying. I have everything ready, just awaiting an interview (going to one today then another hopefully via phone next week). My question is when will board be meeting to make their decision and about how much time would you estimate applicants find out if they have been accepted or not, after board meets? Thanks in advanced!

I finish my psych mental health nurse practitioner program in May. I'm interested navy reserve. I can PM with location if necessary. The regional recruiter I spoke with wanted me to go ahead and apply for a clinical nurse position now, maybe get in, and possibly change my designator later, and that isn't what I chiefly want to do so I'm not interested in that.

Depending on your specialty, Not until late October. If you are one of the below, End of every month until they are all closed: Periop Nursing, Nurse Anesthesia, Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife.

Most results are available to the recruiter about 2-3 weeks after the board.

That is a way to do it, but if you do not want to go that route, then don't. We really need Mental health. Bonus (as of today) is 15k a year for 3 years. Go ahead and PM me, I'll get you the right info. What is your specialty right now? Perhaps there is a larger bonus if you come in as your current specialty..

I won't be able to give you info on service, but there are Navy Nurses that linger on here a regular basis.

From the recruiter standpoint, The process is pretty actually pretty easy. It is just time consuming.

Key things that go into an application:

1. ALL transcripts from higher learning,

2. Personal statement written specifically to your desire to be in Navy Nursing,

3. Physical (all medical documents if you have any issues)

4. Security Clearance form

5. Interviews (your chance to talk to two Navy Nurses directly)

6. Personal Refrences (on one of our forms) from employers from last 3 years and Proffessors, intructors, etc.

It is a 4 page form we provide, you have space to fit about 1800 words or so. I recommend answering these key topics:

WHY NAVY,

WHY NAVY NURSING,

WHY ME,

WHAT ARE MY EXPECTETIONS.

Lean on your background, previous military background if any, legacy in Medicine, hardships, you name it.

I'm currently putting together my packet for the Navy. I don't have high expectations of being picked up because I saw what happened to last year's group. In the event that I am not picked up for Med-Surg, what are the requirements to specialize in Perioperative? I am an OR nurse now, and I am wondering what they need me to have to make that my specialty for the next application packet I may have to do.
