You Make The Big Money...

Our facility is currently experiencing low census and high STNA turnover. There are also a lot of call-offs...mandating current shifters to stay over next shift. (The reasons why is for another day). Recently, a few of the STNAs who must feel used and overworked have said to a few of us nurses "you make the big money...you should stay." I bite my tongue, but if and when they say it again...what would YOU tell them? I want to tell them that I spent hard work and money to "make the so called "big money".. and you can too".....but so far have shut my mouth. Thoughts?

What is an STNA? A type of aide or a type of nurse? If it's an aide, I think I'd say "an aide called in so an aide has to stay. If a nurse called in, a nurse would have to stay"

or are they only saying this to you because you have the responsibility to tell them that they have to stay and they 're shooting the messenger?

If this is the case, I'd tell them: it's company policy. Take it up with (your supervisor/DSD/DON)

These responses assume that the comments were asked genuinely and not sarcastically or in an antagonistic manner. If they were, you need a smart mouth reply...

An STNA is State Tested Nurse Assistant. Most time I don't have to inform them...The DON does. I was mostly referring to the "you make the big money:. just a little irritating, I guess...as I went back to school at 48 and spent MY OWN MONEY TO GO TO SCHOOL. Guess I should keep my mouth shut!?

It would be annoying to listen to that but it's probably better to ignore it. If it's just not possible to completely ignore the comment, simply saying "it would probably be best to discuss staffing concerns with the supervisor" or something along those lines.
