  1. An STNA is State Tested Nurse Assistant. Most time I don't have to inform them...The DON does. I was mostly referring to the "you make the big money:. just a little irritating, I guess...as I went back to school at 48 and spent MY OWN MONEY TO GO TO SCHOOL. Guess I should keep my mouth shut!?
  2. Our facility is currently experiencing low census and high STNA turnover. There are also a lot of call-offs...mandating current shifters to stay over next shift. (The reasons why is for another day). Recently, a few of the STNAs who must feel used and overworked have said to a few of us nurses "you make the big money...you should stay." I bite my tongue, but if and when they say it again...what would YOU tell them? I want to tell them that I spent hard work and money to "make the so called "big money".. and you can too".....but so far have shut my mouth. Thoughts?
  3. Nursing is my second career. I quit my previous job (not in healthcare) to go to school. I never worked as a CNA....one week after passing NCLEX the first time...I was hired. I am glad I could concentrate on school and just passing. The ins and outs on the floor that CNA and PCT were learned quickly by me on the floor....I have no regrets...
  4. Ahhh..disliked the ways of a few clinical instructors....at the time. One year into nursing...they are appreciated... you will soon see. Hang in there and best of luck!
  5. O.C. nursing home operator accused of Medicare fraud settles for $48 million - Los Angeles Times
  6. Sam, your accusations toward me are offensive.
  7. I have never been called out for poor nursing ability, nor poor attitude...so thank you very much. Those that deny such things happen are living in fantasy. The are not accusations, sir....those were from a major report regarding fraud. Stop burying your head in the sand. Fraud and abuse happen every day. If you would like a copy of the Governments' prosecution on the matter, I can send you one. Thanks for caring.
  8. Sam J..that is the kind of info I was looking for..
  9. Naaw..this is the kind of stuff referring to ...I cut and pasted this ...." The documents also reveal stories of patients, like a "92 year old...dying of metastatic cancer...Two days before [his] death, he was spitting out blood. Therapists, however, still recorded 48 minutes of physical therapy, 47 minutes of Occupational therapy, and 30 minutes of speech therapy that very day." "At another facility, the entire rehab staff signed a letter to their boss. It reads in part, "we have been encouraged to maximize reimbursement even when clinically inappropriate." So, back to original post, they would benefit from billing and doing, because they have "in house therapy?" Don't get snooty Silver...I am asking about the monetary benefits. So, the only way LTC benefits is actually if they used fraud????? Thanks!
  10. I am asking because one of the families who is always there to watch as physical therapy is there for their very elderly mother asked me the other day, "All "they" they do is walk her. Your aides walk her to the restroom. Why can't the aides walk her in the hall? Seems like a waste of money." And, yes, I am a nurse and understand the physio. I was asking as monetary issues. Thanks for your thoughts>
  11. Hi. I am one year into my first nursing job in LTC. Can anyone tell me HOW the world of Physical Therapy works in LTC. Keeping in mind I didn't major in Medicare and the World of Reimbursement/Insurance......is there a monetary reason why my facility would "seemingly" (to me) push Physical Therapy on many patients, although they are, say 90 years old and just plain tired (and many ready for Hospice) If you could help me to understand...your comments and insights are appreciated.
  12. Same story here. I have 2 more months to go to keep my promise to myself that I would stick this job out for a year. I don't think ALL LTC facilities are like this...but maybe the majority. Administrators and DON can make all the difference too. Keep your chin up!
  13. In our facility we can send them home at the moment for any insubordination.
  14. I could have been the one posting this....its me! Second career also! I smile, do my job, am courteous, and efficient. I treat my coworkers with respect and fairness...but I pretty much hate them all. I see laziness go crazy. I see lots of chiefs and few Indians. I see management having birthday parties with the administrator for themselves. I hear CNA's and social workers diagnosing residents, apparently earning a doctor's degree by osmosis. I see nurses that have years of experience at the facility forgetting to tell me things in handoff reports....I am going crazy...crazy...crazy.....but 8 months into my career here, I got employee of the month....little do they know...I will be leaving after ONE YEAR. Ugh
  15. yea..that was my concern...it is not at 5 and 6am.....more like 1 and 2 am.....ugh
