Opinions on new "rule"

Just got notice from my boss about a "new rule" that states "The night nurse gives report to both day shift nurses at the same time in the morning at the North nurses station. That way both nurses know what's going on all day regardless."

What do you all think of that?

That's a silly question, sillylil. We don't know anything about your unit, the current procedure for giving report, how the unit is staffed or covered . . .

You haven't given us enough information for us to have an opinion.

Um...not a totally bad idea, but like Ruby said...we need more information.

One small hospital I just finished a contract at did this, they would wait until all the staff were at the nursing station (there were three day shift nurses, two night nurses and one tech for each shift) and give report. I didn't really like it because you'd have the entire hospital there (radiology, respiratory, techs and nurses). It was a very small town and I think radiology and respiratory were there to be nosy more than anything. I'm pretty sure it's a HIPPA violation because unless a person has a reason to know about that patient they shouldn't be involved with report. I can see the techs being there, but most patients had no radiology or respiratory needs so they shouldn't have been involved in the report. Another reason why I don't like it is because many times respiratory and/or radiology would start asking questions about a patient and it was none of their business.

The LTC unit I work on has 2 day shift nurses and 1 night shift nurse.

I'm night shift and I give report to both at the same time. They are each assigned their own hall, so if one is late I can start with the hall of the one who is there. It helps them assist each other to know what is going on in both halls.

We've done it this way since we opened 2 years ago, so it hasn't been a change for anyone.

Since this is a "new rule", people will object because we don't like change.
