Advanced degree in Geriatrics

Hello all!
I have a question about specializing in Geriatrics. I have heard that there will be a big demand for Geriatric nurses in the near future and that the demand will only increase over time. I am currently in a RN program and have thought about this specialty in the future. I LOVE the elderly and feel that I belong with them...that is my driving force to become a Geriatric nurse. With that being said I need to make sure that what I decide to do will be a smart move financially for me and my family. I would love to hear all of your thoughts concerning this matter! Also, what are the choices for this specialization? I do not want to be an adminstrator of a LTC facility...I need more patient contact than that. Thank you for any input you may have

Hello there! My aunt has her ANP and works for the VA specializing in geriatrics...soon she will be a Gerontologist. So, yes, it is a specialty...

I love old folks, too! I have applied for an adult/gero NP program. I love children but I think I am better at working with the older population. I hope I will get in.

If you follow your heart, and do what you love, you will naturally excel in your endeavors and the financial rewards will come in turn

if you do something you dont love, the financial rewards will never seem sufficient

I walked away from a VERY VERY lucrative job because I hated it and it was literally killing me. Physically and spiritually.

I am now considered to be impoverished yet I have never been happier........

(impoverished because I am a non-working, full time student )
