Starting Emory nursing school for the Fall 07

Im starting Emory this fall as well!

I'm having problems though figuring out how to pay for tuition. It is so high. If I may ask, are you getting a scholarship? How you working out tuition costs?

Hello,

Do I think that Emory is worth the money? Let me put it like this, I already have 1 degree and I enjoyed my 1st undergrad experience. I spent a very long time making a decision on which nursing clinicals I wanted to attend after I finished my B.A. in History and Sociology. I decided on Emory because I knew that there were many places that cost much less and I could become a nurse. I went to Emory's open house and talked to several students over the course of several months.... I feel that Emory will give me sooooooo much more than JUST my BSN. I suppose it depends on what you value. Do I think that you should end up in serious debt attempting to afford any type of degree (no) I think that you should bargin shop. I was lucky and received full tuition (NEAT & a few other scholarships). I am not living on campus so I will be responsible for my living expenses.

Do you qualify for Pell grants? I have Pell, student loans and through the Missouri Career Center they have a program called WIA/Country Lakes. They will pay $3500 towards tuition (before pell and student loans), they will pay $10 a day for gas to school, they will pay for my uniforms and for my OK Pike Pass to go through the OK transit authority. They will pay up to $5,000 a year for school which helps immensley. Check with GA. I started nursing school there and received the GA Hope scholarship. Good luck!!!!! I miss GA!!!!!:studyowl:

Yuppie and Mandee...have you been enjoying the paperwork coming in from Emory? I am pulling my hair out dealing with kids on summer break and getting it all together! When I received my acceptance letter in December it seemed like the start of the semester was forever away...now it's right around the corner and everything is being thrown at us. Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! I am excited though...can't wait til it starts. And Mandee...I, like Yuppie, am very fortunate that I received a few scholarships plus NEAT to cover my full tuition. I hope you can manage it! I must believe it is worth the money because I could have gone to a state school and have it paid for through the HOPE scholarship :lol2: See you both at orientation!

OMG... I have so much paper work to finish and I just got the Meng. shot a couple of days ago. I din't need it but I thought "what the hell" I am working in a hospital environment so not too much of a big deal.

JO JO have you bought your books yet? I will be visiting Atlanta again in Mid July and I would love to pick them up but I don't have a clue where to start????? I am also thinking about doing a general student orientation so that I become familiar with EMORY itself. Did you sign up to work for Crawford Long with the NEAT?

Geez, so far I feel like the only one going in without the NEAT. I turned in the application late b/c I got accepted late..so I guess that's why I didn't recieve it. Oh well, Congrats on you both getting it!

Yeah the paperwork is overwhelming but I think I got most of it finished, did you get a chance to get your BLS certification card? I just took care of that a few weeks ago.

I took care of the BLS thing months ago because I knew that I would be running around like a chicken with my head cut off this summer and did not want to worry about getting that done. I will be finished with my last pre-req. next Friday and then I am going to really party.:balloons:

I took care of my BLS stuff about a year and a half ago which means right before the end of our first semester I need to re-certify. No books yet, Yuppie...I haven't seen a booklist although I checked online at the bookstore. Gotta wait for the big fat financial aid check to pay for everything :lol2: I am such a slacker...I haven't even gotten my immunizations in order. When I applied for NEAT I picked Crawford Long and Emory University Hospital...I don't really have an interest in Wesley Woods and certainly don't want work there for 2 years.

I did a crazy thing and got a part time job near my home (about an hour from Emory) to kill time before school starts. It's my first job in 8 years, other than being a full time mom. Big mistake, but I don't want to quit yet. Between it and the kids and my husband, I am bald. In about 3 weeks I am going to be visited by my brother and his family for a week. I just recently located him after 20 years of no contact so I am REALLY looking forward to seeing him.

I am glad I don't have to do all the moving and relocating like some of you guys are doing, though! I don't think I could take that on with everything else. I am looking forward to school. It's going to be my 2 year vacation!

Welcome from a returning senior!

Glad you guys are so excited, I remember this time last year and boy- it DOESN'T seem that long ago! No one asked, I guess, but here are my words of wisdom/what I've learned about Emory:

- HAVE FUN. Enjoy your classmates, don't forget about your families. Yes, nursing school is hard, but its not rocket science- its time management. Your sanity is most important. You'll hear all the seniors talking about how hard it is and how stressed they are- ignore 90% of that. You'll soon discover most are stressed over keeping their 4.0, not passing. You WILL get through it, and a B won't kill you.

- The first semester is the hardest. The schedule sucks, its a lot of labs and crap. Just get through it. It gets MUCH better in the spring.

- Fear the fishbowl. I'm not going to ruin the surprise for you. Respect the fishbowl. Tell your pharmacology professor you LOVE the fishbowl. He's a great teacher and you'll really enjoy him, but he'll stress you out with Fishbowl. Its for your own good, I promise.

- Every teacher here, without fail, is here to see you graduate. Don't forget that when you are hating them. They WILL help you if you ask.

- Go ahead and buy two uniforms. You may not need them both first semester, but you will second semester, so just do it now.

- The people in the office of student services in the nursing school will help you with ANYTHING. If they don't know the answer to your question, they know who knows.

- If you didn't get NEAT, CHANCES, etc this year- you can reapply for the senior year! I know people in my class that were successful the second time around. Also, look into the Northside Scholars Program, which is similar, but through Northside Hospital- yes, even if you aren't into OB! Contact the Patient Care Administration Office at Northside Hospital (Atlanta Campus). The Spring deadline should be in April.

- If you are on the fence about the student insurance- its actually a good plan. If you can get a cheaper one through your spouse etc, great, but if not, the Aetna student plan has treated me well. BONUS- covers 100% of *all* vaccinations at student health- including the HPV vaccine series. That's right, a $450 vaccine series AT NO COST TO YOU. Cervical cancer is no fun, ladies.

- Don't run out and buy books right now, there will be a lot of emails flying around closer to the start of school with seniors selling off books. Its HARD to find used books. You will not, by the way, need to buy all of the books. Definitely buy the Med-Surg book your first semester- you WILL use it as a great reference from the very beginning. Don't buy Tabers, the Drug guide, or the Laboratory Tests Guide book if you are looking to go PDA- you can get free lab and drug advisors for PDA online and Tabers for PDA is the same price as the book version. The "Reviews and Rationales" series of study guides are great- I STRONGLY recommend both the Nursing Fundamentals and the Med-Surg one.... you might see some of the review questions from the book somewhere else- hint, hint. Also, look to seniors for tutoring if you find yourself worried about your first round of tests, we can help you prepare- these tests are DIFFERENT!

PS- The paperwork doesn't get any better, the seniors are stuck with a bunch of it right now too! :trout:

Hello,

I am so tired at this point. I can't wait for school to start. For now, I am more worried about what I am going to do once I leave EMORY. I Know that I have to go work for Crawford Long although I wish I had done CHANCES so that I could work for the children's hospital instead of one of EMORY's hospitals.

Might you know where we are suppose to buy uniforms or will we make the purchase when school starts at the supply fair?
