KSU accelerated RN program Spring 2012

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

Ok, so I've kind of looked around the site, but I can't find what I'm looking for. I applied to the KSU accelerated nursing program for the Spring of 2012. Our applications, TEAS score, etc. already had to be turned in by May 31st. I was curious to know about how long they take to get back to you to let you know if you made it to the second round. I've got a 3.2 GPA right now, and I graduate from UGA in December with a BS in Psychology. I made a 91.3% overall score on the TEAS V. Does anyone have any idea about my chances of getting in? I took the TEAS without even taking A&P at all, but I'm taking it right now. Any advice if I do make it to the second round? I am CPR/First Aid certified and I have my CNA. Also, if anybody needs any advice about the TEAS, I'd be happy to answer some questions and tell you what I thought of it.

Thanks!

Thanks gtqueen. I have one more shot of HB remaining and I was told not to eat the day of the physical in order to get all of them done the same day. But stil all the results don't come in the same day and I don't know how long it takes to get them. I asked the lady in person and she had no clue. I need an x ray too which she scheduled for me on the same day of the physical but she doesn't know how long it takes x ray result to be out either. Do you know how long it usually take this results to be out? If it takes more than a week, I can just get everything done at a public health center this month than waiting til my appointment to only get disappointed.

X-ray results are usually in the same day. I would think at most 2-3 days. However, if you are having lab work done for titers, that could take longer. I'm not sure how long. It would depend on the lab, and how busy they are. You could call the KSU clinic and ask if they accept insurance, because I'm sure they do. While you're on the phone, just ask them if they can do the titers for you and how long it would take. Otherwise, the public health center may be your best bet, since you aren't able to determine how long the results are going to take.

Ok Thanks!

To anyone already in the program-

Do any of you guys have a part time job? I work at a daycare center 4 days a week and I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the work load for the courses during the first semester. I am trying to decide whether or not to keep my job or if it is realistic to have a job while being in the nursing program. I am in the traditional program, so i will only have holistic, patho and health assessment. I hear that the workload is pretty intense but i think that it may be doable if i managed my time the right way... please let me know what you guys think, i appreciate any opinions :)

The Wellstar School of Nursing has an official stance on employment. While this isn't a "rule" for students, it is a guideline that they strongly recommend you follow.

"The WellStar School of Nursing has conducted a small study of our own students, as well as a literature review in the area of jobs and academic success. Based on this research, the faculty suggests that students who must work consider only part-time work (less than 20 hours per week) and where possible, that employment be in a healthrelated field as these two variables correlated highest with academic success. As for students enrolled in the accelerated nursing program, the educational program is quite demanding. Accelerated students are required to be full-time students taking 12-15 credit hours per semester. Hence, any employment, including part-time is strongly discouraged in order for the student to be academically successful." -Wellstar School of Nursing Handbook

I can say that I was employed full-time prior to enrolling. As an accelerated student, I knew that I would be unable to maintain this schedule, but I still opted to work part-time. Unfortunately, that didn't last long. My job is very flexible, and I was able to alter my schedule as needed, but I currently only work about 1-2 times per month. I know that you mentioned you are a traditional student, and I know both traditional students with jobs and those without. It will most certainly be a time management issue for you if you choose to maintain any type of employment. However, I would suggest letting your employer know upfront that there can be large variations in your schedule between classes, lab, clinical and studying. The faculty at KSU are understanding of life most of the time, but this is a rigorous program that many people want to get into. So, they are not usually sympathetic to work conflicts. They expect you to put the program before any work obligations. I know that sounds harsh, but I do want to realistically prepare you. Good luck to you, and I certainly hope that it works out for you managing both school and work. If you set your mind to it and time manage well, you can do it! ;)

Thank you for that information!! I appreciate you answering all of these questions! So excited to start and so ready for orientation. I will continue to think about my work situation.. my work schedule is already going to be messed up because i was only able to get holistic nursing on Monday-Friday instead of Monday-Wednesday, and Fran clearly told me that she was unable to make any overrides.. although i did see alot of them in the past semesters? I guess they save the overrides for the standby students..

@Klove10 I wasnt able to get M-W too but M-F is really good if you think about it. It gives you more time to get ahead of your classes. I'm traditional as well, am not working though but that's because I can't find a job lol I'd work 8hrs once a week(saturdays) with that schedule if I were you. You got free Wednesdays, thursdays and Sundays and they btw class days so thats good.

I thought I would let you guys know that Uniform Advantage gives 10% off any purchase with student ID. If you stay in marietta or close by, Its a really good store to get your uniform. I got my bottoms and white leather shoe there and I Loove the items. The store is at cobb parkway, just about 3miles from Cumberland mall.

I can't wait to meet you all at orientation! :) !!

My stethoscope is finally here...getting the rest of my paperwork completed tomorrow for physicals etc.!

eep i'm getting excited again!

Keep in mind that you all do not yet know what day your clinical will be. It can be any day Wed-Sat. Some students get Wed/Fri (the same as their lab), and it doesn't affect their schedule as much. However, they have to spread everyone out, so you may get Thu or Sat. This semester they sent around a request sheet, and we could write in our first and second choices with one day that we absolutely couldn't do it. They told us to be flexible because not everyone can have Wed/Fri. You are not guaranteed any of your options, but they try to schedule you with at least your first or second choice. Just wanted to remind you all of that potential change in your schedule. Also, clinical sites range anywhere from Kennesaw to Austell to Rome to Downtown Atlanta. So, be prepared to drive, if necessary.

One last bit of advice: Practice makes perfect! So, spend as much time in the lab practicing your skills as possible. Skills check-offs will be MUCH less stressful if you know the skills like the back of your hand.

Thanks gtqueen! When you said first or second choice do you mean the hospitals and location or the clinical day?

You get a first and second choice for Clinical Day. They will decide your location based on where you live. Just because you live in Kennesaw doesn't mean that you will get Kennestone. Sometimes they have to put students that live further north at the Kennestone location and those in Kennesaw will have to drive further South. They try to make it as fair as possible. For instance, I live in Marietta, about 2-3 miles from Kennestone, and I was placed at Wellstar Cobb in Austell.
