Georgia Perimeter College ADN Program??

Hello all,

I am looking for someone to give me an honest review of the ADN program at Georgia Perimeter College. I have read/heard many, many horrible comments about the program there. Also, I understand that they were on the verge of loosing accreditation, and had to increase NCLEX pass numbers, and that their way of accomplishing that was to fail out everyone who might not pass. At any rate, I know that GPC's program was quite bad in mid 2000's, but who's there now? Has it improved? Are you teachers good/helpful? How many people are dropping from your class? Would you go there if you had it to do again? Just looking for some advice... Thanks

I'm a 2nd semester student and I can tell you that I have not experienced any of the things people complained of on the old threads. The instructors have always been friendly and helpful.

I don't know how it was back then but I do know that 2 of the things people complained about on old threads, are no longer the case. We have 3 chances at skills checkoffs. Not 2. Fail your 3rd attempt at a skill and you are out of the program. IMO, when it comes to checkoffs, if you fail out, you can't blame the school for failing you out. You need to practice as much as you can so you can perform the skill. If you are not getting the hang of a particular skill, grab 1 of the instructors in the lab and say hey, I'm having trouble with this, please help.

No one has ever refused to help me when I had a problem. Matter of fact, I've heard people say that before that the school fails you out, I can't agree with that. You need a 75 average to pass the class. Its not the school's fault if you don't meet that 75 average. Its up to you to study and work hard and know that if you have a problem to quickly address it and not let it snowball. If you are having trouble with exams, don't wait till the end of the semester to panic that you've been barely passing. There are resources to help if you reach for help. I don't know if those resources were in place in the early years, but they are there now.

Someone mentioned in an old thread that they had to watch old videos to learn skills. I can tell you thats not the case. Our class last semester scored very well on the ATI exit exam. A test that many nursing students across the country have to take, and our class scores on average were among the highest.

Are some instructors better at teaching than others? Of course. Just like pre-reqs and any other classes. Nothing different in nursing school. Some instructors are AWESOME! and then a few others are just OK. Personally, I have loved being at GPC. Its tough, no doubt about it. But I like being pushed to my limit. It brings out the best in me in the end.

Thank you so much for that reply. I've recently moved here from Mobile AL and have just applied to GPC for the Nursing Program. I'm excited to here they have turned the program around. The negative comments I was reading gave me second thoughts.

That makes me feel so much better. I have also applied for Spring 2011 and just finished taking the TEAS V last Thursday. Reading reviews made me a bit nervous, I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that most people are going to post negative things and leave out the positives.

I also read those threads about how horrid GPC was. I've spoken to several people who have all told me that none of the previous concerns/complaints are currently accurate.

I also took the TEAS V at GPC in late June (the 23rd). Hope we all hear good news about Spring 2012! All of my nurse friends tell me, repeatedly, it's not where you go to school, but the work you put into your own education. I couldn't agree more.

Good luck to all you spring hopefuls, the waiting is really treadful. But once you get your letter the waiting to start school is painful as well,lol.I will be attending in the Fall, and I am ready to start now. I will try to keep you guys posted! My fingers are crossed for all of you.

This may be too late for some of you. I am currently completing a BSN degree. Prior to appling to a University I attended GPC for about 1 semester. It was a nightmare. The instructors and program directors are miserable people. If you would like to test your self esteem go to GPC or join the military. The military is less likely to shatter your dreams. Thank goodness I went to another program before investing more time and money. I am an experienced student with a BS degree and I have never seen anything like the GPC nursing instructors. There are several ADN and BSN programs in the Atlanta area and many more in Georgia. Do your research and check with current and past students. The posts from 2006 are old but largely still accurate. They have inferior instructors. Using a website and reading prefab powerpt's is not teaching. The instructors are insecure and take there insecurities out on the students. It is virtually impossible to ask questions or for help. They seem to resent your questions and heaven forbid they may not know the answer!

Please don't set yourself up for a fall and waste your time and money. If you can qualify for GPC you can get accepted to a better program anywhere! Look at posts on facebook for more information from other students.

I am in my final semester at GPC. Has it been tough? Yes!! Have a learned a lot - OF COURSE! The professors are tough but willing to help you if you need it.Any hospital where I have done clinical has told me they would rather have a GPC student on the floor than any other school because we are more clinically prepared. Some of the things I was doing at the end of my first semester in clinical, some nurses told me they had 4th semester from another school that could not do it.We are tied for second in NCLEX pass rate in the state( go to Ga Board of Nursing to check it out) - the only school above us in a small school that only had about 50 students - we had about 450. You have an excellent chance of getting hired as a GPC graduate - our reputation is great in the field. If anybody has negative thinkgs to say about GPC, my guess is because they could not get through the program. It is a great school.

i too have been accepted into the program but I haven't decided if i will attend. the negative comments have gotten to me and i do not want to set myself up for failure.
