Anyone else upset with TCN?

U.S.A. Georgia

If you are reading this then you probably already know I live in GA, which means I am being effected by the State Board of Nursing no longer accepting Excelsior RN/ASN degree. I have paid the TCN $2000 so far, and still owe $2000 more. Since my program is no longer applicable, I want my money back... not some of the money.... all of it. TCN's respose to this entire mess is that because Sonny Purdue says "he wants to help distance learning nurses", TCN feels there is still hope that GA will change its mind... so I have been given the option of either continuing to wait for the next 10 yrs or so until they have a "final" decision for them to give all of my money back, or I can get half of my money back (by that I mean I have to pay them $2k, and they don't charge me the second $2k). Keep in mind... I HAVE NOT TAKEN ONE TEST WITHIN THIS TIME FRAME!!!!! I don't know what to do to get out of this, I am discouraged, and feel cheated. More than anything, I need that $2K to pay for school locally in GA if I can't finish my RN on line.

If anyone has any suggestion, at all, for how to proceed from here, please let me know. I feel backed into a corner, and my husband and myself are so upset.

Hey, I feel your pain. That sucks big time. A third option to consider is to get your license through another state, and see if you can transfer it to Georgia. Also, I heard some people talking about a class action suit against Exc. You might get your money back that way, but it would probably take years. If you have a lawyer, maybe you can talk to him/her. Hope this helps. Again, sorry about this mess.

Thanks for the support, but your suggestion is just the problem. TCN ASN degree is from NY, and GA will no longer accept it by Endorsement... so, I'm afraid I'm just stuck. I will however, submit a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, as a last resort.

discouraged, there is a huge thread in the Distance Learning forum by and about Georgia nurses affected by this. Stop in and give it a look.

I'm sorry this has happened to you.

:angryfireI am going through the same thing that you are, with the whole excelsior thing. But I've already paid distance learning and kaylim career center 2 grand each, not to mention tuition for EC, and fees for testing and practice test, lets not let me forget about additional text books. I'm so upset. I'm just going to finish EC. Get my RN degree, and sue the HE_L out of GEORGIA, if they don't endorse me. If the governor of the state said he doesn't agree with the board, and he said, he hope that this doesn't discourage student from continuing their education with the institution, then there you have it, law suite. How is this a law? If your own Boss ( the GBON consists of 8 members appointed by the Governor ) said there is no evidence to prove the RN's who graduate from this program are unsafe, where do you get off??? Again can somebody say law suite!!!!!!!!!!!!:angryfire

Your plight is another good reason why people should not go through TCN for the Excelsior program. There are threads and posts ad infinitum on this site warning against the publishing companies. I would not count on getting any money back from them. You have to consider whether or not you care to take this up with an attorney. Most likely just another expense to hear that your contract is binding and you have no recourse. TCN has been bilking people for years so I'm quite sure that their contracts are irontight. But you might want to try. Good luck.

i am going through ec without the help of any of these publishing companies. however i do feel bad for people who feel like they are out of money.but my question is, why do you feel as if you are entitle to be let out of your contract, or given any money back, by the publishing company? (notice i said entitled, not want your money back) it isn't the publishing company fault that ga made this decision, the publishing company is still going to send you your study materials right? you have a contract to pay for the study materials, not a contract stating they guarantee you will be able to get endorsement in the state of georgia. i don't understand why everyone is so upset with the publishing company.

People are upset with the publishing companies because they take advantage of people. Rarely do you read of someone who has gone the publishing company route, regretted it, and acknowledging that they had made a mistake. Judging by some of the posts that I have read here and elsewhere, there are many who are new to the process who get mixed up into thinking that the publishing companies are the only way to go. They literally don't know that you can do the EC program without any outside involvement, thus saving a lot of money. There is nothing wrong with the publishing companies promoting their products per se, but their sales pitch should have at least one sentence informing the consumer that EC is possible without purchasing their program. Then, there would be no reason to complain. Buyer's remorse is natural and everyone should read the contract thoroughly before committing themselves to it.

Excelsior finally got their domain back, but for a long time if you used www.excelsior.com it would take you to The College Network.

Can we say, "sneaky"?

I agree. Recently requested info on the ISU program and received an email from TCN before I got anything from the school. Needless to say I first learned that TCN is not required by reading posts on this site. This was confirmed by the ISU email. I highly doubt that the TCN rep would have told me this if I had been gullible enough to contact them back.

One of my collegues at the college her was looking into TCN and the rep came here on site. So, I sat in on the meeting. Since I had already been enrolled in EC without using one of the publishing companies I was curious as to what would be said. This guy never admitted they were not associated with EC. Even when I asked why you could not go directly to EC he was vague and never really answered the question.

I finally got angry and let him know I knew that for a fact they were not associated with EC and that anyone can go straight to EC to complete their degree requirements.

They tried to lock her into nine thousand dollars worth of study guides.

I can see how someone can get conned into one of these contracts. They are very smooth with their pitch.

i feel as if i am entitled to have my money back for several reasons; (1) this decision was made in july, and tcn has yet to contact any of their students being effected by the change in state law. (2) my contract actually does state tcn is aware my license would be from ny, however, that my license will be accepted through endorsement by the state of ga. (3) i have not taken any tests thus far, so their materials at this point are useless to me. i had previously completed all course work except for the nursing requirements. (4) i would have been happy for them to at least say that as of july my money would be returned, and that i would no longer be responsible for the remainder, as i am returning their materials to them. (5) at my local college, where i am currently enrolled (since this decision has been made) i am only paying $900/semester... i could pay for the rest of my asn with the money they are still asking me to pay.

i do not need that money in my hands; i need the money to pay for the degree i thought i would be getting from ec, via tcn. now that this is not the case, i want the money to pay for my current classes where my degree will actually be obtained.

please don't assume i did not read my contract carefully, because that is just not the case and i do feel just in my reasoning. take a look at it from my shoes... give me $4k of your money and let me shred it to pieces; what have you gained? the same thing i have, absolutely nothing. :angryfire
