I'm about to begin my program this January and was wondering what thoughts the more experienced nurses and students have on this issue. During my undergrad, I was able to work 3 jobs, take 18 credit hours and pass, participate in Greek life and be active in a few clubs. Now as I am starting my nursing career, I am looking at being a full time student and a full time employee.

What advice or recommendations do you all have for students in my situation who need to continue to work while we complete our education?

Thanks!!

Everyone is different, some can handle it while others can't. I worked full time and I know some people that did and some that could not even handle working part time while in nursing school.

I worked full time while in nursing school. I studied during lunch and after work. I did classes in the evening and clinics on weekends. It was a long two years but you have to be prepared to give up things and miss events. It can be done if you are organized. It depends on the person.

I averaged 30h week and had no problems. Where I would have had stress and difficulty is not having any income during the years I was in nursing school! :)

I agree that everyone is different and it depends on what you can handle, time management skills, support from family, etc. I just started 3rd semester and have and will continue to work 36hrs a week. I work weekend nights so I have a lot of down time that I can study there. I also have 2 kids under 4 and a husband that is very supportive. I miss out on a lot but I'm over halfway done and it is just temporary. Good luck!
