I'm very excited. It's one of the only hospitals in the area that offer externships to students after their FIRST semester. They also offer externships in L&D, which is a little harder to come by than other areas. The downside is that it's 1 1/2 hours away, so it would be a crappy commute. But I'd be willing to do it in order to gain some valuable experience, especially since our local hospital will not hire anyone for L&D without a year's prior experience.

congrats! One of the few things I regret about my time in nursing school is that I was not able to do an externship. It makes such a big difference once you start working- the nursing students we have had come through as externs since I started working (striaght out of school on LDRP) will be months ahead of where I was when I began my orientation. Not only have they learned many of the skills they will need, but they have a more holistic view of our birth center and of the many multifaceted roles our nurses perform. They were a great asset as externs and a joy to work with- I hope our group of last summer's externs come back to us when they graduate!

Congrats to you Kerry! That's great. I just finished orientation last week to start an externship. I really envy you that you will have the opportunity to work in OB. It seems like that is the field everyone wants to go into (including me ) so it is so much harder to find a spot there. Keep us informed on how things go for you. :)
