What would you do? Re: another student was "given" points (this is long)

Hi ; maybe you remember me, I am the student who missed out on going to my first clinical rotation, because I failed a math quiz by one point. Now I have been off school since December, have not had any lab experience since November, and about to try again to get in for Spring. I feel out of whack. Here is my issue: I have found out that a person in my class failed med-surg, threw a fit, went into the instructors office and went through all of their prior tests. This student found 2 1/2 more points that they should have received, and still needed 1/2 point to pass the course (to continue on to clinicals). Now mind you this was not a math quiz but flunking a whole class. Guess what? The teacher gave the student the 1/2 point and they ended up with a C. I got a B in that class, did better than a C and could not go to clinicals. Had I been given the opportunity to force the issue, I could have begged for the one point to get to clinicals. As it was I filed a petiton to the dean just to retake the quiz, and never heard a word back from the director or anyone. What do you think of this? :nono:

It seems as though the other person wasn't given an opportunity, but rather took it.

I don't agree with giving any student any extra points, and this is why. If it is done for one student it should be done for every student.

How did you find out? Can you not use this information for your favor?

I think that in alot of programs rounding up is the norm. So a half a point is the most they will give a student. Because you needed a whole point this wouldn't have helped you even if it was offered. In my program as in all others that I have heard of the med calculation test requirements are strict because they are so crucial for patient safety.

I have to agree, a half a point on say a biliary test is a lot differnt than a whole point on a math quiz. Sorry but that one you missed may just be the one calculation that causes real harm to a patient.

The other student may have gotten the points to procede with clinicals, but that doesnt mean they will pass either. They are already walking on thin ice by whinning to the instructors about that one point. They will be under strict scrutiny during their clinicals. I think the best bet would be to walk with your head up, study the math a little harder and move on.

Keep fighting youll get there!

You know, I would rather have my integrity to hold my head up high, like one of you said. Knowing I actually passed a test, and did not have to look like an idiot. this person has scraped by the whole two semesters. How did I find out about the 1/2 point? Another person overheard this student practically bragging about the experience in the hallway to others. I think somewhere along the line this student won't make it. thanks for all your replies. :nurse:

Shoulda, woulda, coulda...but didn't. The past is the past. Focus on the future & doing better for yourself. And never compare yourself to someone else in class. It's self-defeating.

Not trying to sounds rude...but I would worry about myself before I worry about someone else in the class. You don't know all the circumstances, you may think you do, but unless you where in the room when the choice was made to pass that student, you don't know.

Also, why didn't YOU follow up with higher ups on that petition you sent to the dean? They have so much stuff that comes across their desk and things get lost. When I filed my petition for a refund I called the dept head once a week until he knew my voice...I got my money because I pushed the issue.

Things will not just come to you...you have to go out and get them!
