The truth about Depo

I sit on a advisory board and we held a forum this afternoon for at-risk teenage girls and their parents. It was entitled "Don't get burned this summer" and it dealt with teen sex, pregnancy, and STDs. Well, of course we had Planned Parenthood come in to discuss a lot of the technical stuff, and to offer free exams and birth control (with parent permission) for the sexually active.

During the birth control portion of Planned Parenthood's presentation the nurse speaking said that the shot would probably be the wisest choice for the majority of the group because it was extremely effective and you didn't have to remember to take a pill every day. She then asked the group why the shot was so effective. The young lady the nurse called on answered

"Because once you get your first period after you get your shot it never goes off...so you never get a chance to do anything!"

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

The nurse blushed and all the room could do was laugh. So true!

I got the Depo shot one time, and one time only. I think they gave it to me while I was on my period, and after that I never even had spotting or anything. That was nice. Nothing else was.

My boyfriend said it was the best birth control, because we never had sex! Just no drive at all, and even if I did get in the mood, my boyfriend probably won't want anything to do with me. First of all, I gained 20 pounds. Secondly, I was just a b**** on Depo! I'd be screaming at someone (usually the boyfriend) for no real reason, and AS I was yelling I'd be thinking to myself, "Why am I screaming? I'm not even upset? Why can't I stop?" and would just keep on ranting. Sucked.

Nuvaring now. Periods last 1-2 days. Weight stable. :)

I still am on depo and I use to bleed for the whole month before it was due. then I told my doctor about the bleeding and now I get it like a week before its actually due and don't bleed at all. My friend says that whe doesn't want to not bleed at all and thinks that's abnormal and is on the pill, but I see it as long as I'm not pregnant and I don't have to deal with back pains, swollen feet and can sleep on my stomach. Plus when your pregnant you don't have a period but that's not abnormal. So its just great for me.:)

Maire,

Please tell me that the Pill you are on is Ortho Tricylcen. I started taking them yesterday and I've read that it does aid in getting rid of acne. I hope it helps me.

Yup! Give it a few weeks and it should clear it all up! The only time I get a blemish now is right before my period starts. I can live with that!

Great!!!! I have been feeling a little nauseous, but it's nothing I can't handle.

I have been on Depo for about three years. (Ever since I've had my daughter). I always contributed my lack of sex drive to "having the baby". I never had a period. but, every time I'd cry I'd began to spot. I'm getting off of it. Although I never gained a single pound, my cousin blew up on it and it took my aunt 6 months to get pregnant once she got off of it. For those of you who are not on it anymore, does your sex drive ever come back?
