today was the first day of my second year of nursing school (adn program). at the very end of the day i found out i was one of 8 students chosen by the previous year's clinical instructors for a special clinical experience. instead being assigned to a clinical group of 10 with one instructor, i will get to be one on one with a nurse. i don't know if that means i need special attention or if i'm doing really well, but i am SO EXCITED. i think i will learn so much by being precepted in this way. yay!

Good job!! CONGRATS! I would think I'd believe the "doing very well" statement, as if you're only 1 of 8 students who get this chance, then it usually means you are ahead of the curve. That's awesome, here's hoping we have that kind of chance in 3rd semester....

Specializes in ICU.

So originally it is more than one student for each nurse??

At my school, we're broken into teams of 12, then we stay at one hospital and each of us have our own nurse preceptor. I don't even see any other students or classmates when I am in clinical. Sometimes I see my instructor for like 3 minutes, but the rest of the day we are all with our nurse. It's pretty cool.

That's how it is with us, also.

if i could spend most of my time with a nurse preceptor, that would be AMAZING. so far our clinicals have been set up so that there is one instructor per group of 10-12 students. the students are spread out throughout the floors of the hospital. our instructor has had to be present for all things like iv pushes, and any of our "firsts" - first IM shot, first dressing change, etc. It can be very frustrating when an opportunity comes up to do something, anything, and then having to wait for the instructor to arrive. in the past we've been assigned one patient to do total care on, grabbing our instructor or a nurse if we have questions. THIS quarter my clinical experience will be one on one with a nurse - watching, then assisting, then gradually doing as much of her patient load as i can. my instructor won't even be on the hospital campus, so if something comes up, i can do anything with my nurse. i am hoping to get some IV starts and hang some blood - two major goals for the quarter.

I think you should be proud of yourself . You sound like you a great student and heading in the direction of being a great nurse.
