Student nurse Jack MacFarland... Discuss

Nursing Students General Students

Not a huge Will & Grace fan, but am loving Jack in nursing school. I love it for these reasons:

Instead of getting dumb blond & bimbo jokes, the show using humor related to nursing. How bout Jack using his skills to get dates. "I'm Jack, student nurse. If anyone needs a breast exam... men only, send them over" That joke while professionally inappropriate was hilarious.

It's not like nursing school, but I have understood every piece of dialogue and obviously they hired a consultant to write some of the material. How about when the tough instructor pimped Jack on some vital signs basics. Loved it cause I could answer the questions.

While it is played for laughs, you can tell nursing school is serious business showing students getting together to study & this has been the only occupation Jack has showed real emotion toward.

Any other views on the only student nurse prominently shown on tv right now?

I don't think this discussion got "off topic" at all, I think it is right on topic and its good we are discussing it I think, because its relevant to us all. Especially if males in vast numbers are leaving nursing--we don't want *anyone* to be leaving nursing because we need nurses desperatly!

I do wonder though, and maybe some one can find out, if the male nurses that are leaving- are they leaving nursing for good or going on to further education (CRNA, NP, etc)?

hey all,

i'm just going to put in my wee point of view on this topic :-)

student nurse jack rocks!! *lol* he's just funny all the time, so him being a student nurse is much funnier because it's something i can really relate to (not that i can't relate to being gay...i'm not a gay man *lol*).

about this s/he thing in the textbooks...i've totally noticed it to. it makes me angry that all the nursing books always use just "she" to describe the actions of the nurse. strangely enough, most of the time when the text is discussing a baby, he is most often used...i can't figure it out. then again, i can't figure out why i call dogs "he" but call cats "she"...but that's a whole nother post!!

after studying some religion and some latin, i have come to my own personal conclusion that one major failing of the english language is the we have no gender neutral pronouns. we use "he" when we are not speaking of a specific person, but i feel that's just because most authors and typesetters were male when printing first began to become popular (and for a long damn time after that too!)

so what can we do about language that is not gender neutral. well, if people would learn the english language properly, they could write and not have to use he or she specificially...or just use titles "the nurse" or "one"...that would make me happier, but nothing seems to work out that way...so i'll just tell myself that the english language sucks, and not get upset when i see everything being written for "he".

:-)

for men in nursing...you go boy!! i would love to see many more men getting into nursing, but i agree with most of the sentiments already expressed...that most people in general percieve nurses as "those who undertake the orders of the doctor"...a role which i believe many men would not want to undertake, geez...i wouldn't want to either!! *lol*

not all men in nursing are gay...but gee...wouldn't our uniforms be much cuter if they were!? *lol* (just a joke...not meaning to offend anyone!!!) :kiss
