Hi All,
I'm in an ADN Program. We have a total of 5 Semesters - we started in August and will go right through with no real breaks (except Holidays) until Graduation in May, 2006. I think we only have a week off between end of Spring Semester and beginning of Summer Semester (no Tan for us this year) :chuckle
I noticed that a lot of people in other ADN Programs only have 4 Semesters and was just curious why some schools have 4 and some have 5. I'm assuming we're all learning the same things - just wondering if maybe those in 4 Semester Programs are taking more classes at a time than those of us in a 5 Semester Program.. Does anyone know why some schools do this differently?

I'm also in an ADN program with 5 semesters. Semester 3 for us is in the summer between year 1 and year 2. During this semester we take pharmacology. I guess the ones with only 4 semesters include this class in with the others during the first year. But this is only my opinion though LOL

I'm in a four semester ADN program, the only thing I can think of is because we take two Nursing classes in our second semester, and then in our fifth we take one nursing class and some lecture that's only worth one point.

It must be the way the classes are broken up. We have only four semesters. Pharmacology is taken before or with semester 1. It is a "nursing" course and many have taken it the summer before nursing school. However, it's not counted as a nursing semester. We have three semesters of phys ed taken with 2, 3 and 4. There is one semester of psych in semester 3 for those who haven't already taken it. All of our general science and health science courses are generally out of the way by the time we begin nursing school although there have been some exceptions.

I, too, am in an AD program and we have 4 semesters. Before we can even apply, however, we must have A&P, micro, chem, and math out of the way. Once accepted, we have four semesters of nursing/nursing skills lab/nursing clincal, with pharmacology taken the first semester. All of the other courses required for graduation (nutrition, humanities, English, Psych, etc.) need to be taken, but can be taken before we start the actual 4 semesters, or can be taken simultaneously with the nursing classes, or during the summer semesters.

ours is also 4 semesters. i think they just cram more work into these 4 semesters :) we have a few summer classes-drug dosage summer before you start, but can take in fall. topics in nursing if your class average is btw 75-80 at end of first year. a review class.

Ours is 5 semesters.
Semester 1: Fundamentals, Basic Pharm, Health Assessment, A&P2 & Psychology if you don't already have them
Semester 2: Adult Health I, Adv. Pharm, Psychosocial Nsg. I, Geriatrics
Semester 3: Peds, Psychosocial Nsg II, Micro & Speech if you haven't taken them yet
Semester 4: Adult Health II, Maternal/Neonatal Nsg, Elective if you haven't taken one yet
Semester 5: Adult Health III, Role Transition
I'm very hopeful to pass everything the 1st go around and not have to repeat anything. I'm hoping they won't make me repeat Fundamentals. I was 3 minutes late to our clinical site on Wednesday.

My school has 5 semesters but for some reason we always refer to the last semester as the 4th semester - I guess they don't consider the summer semester a true semester.
