Question about the NET

Hi All,

I'm sort of flipping out here and had some questions about the NET. Compared to what many of your schools require to apply - the ADN Program I've applied to didn't seem too bad. Prior Chemistry or Biology, College Algebra and English - with passing grades, CPR Certification, etc. They accepted my English, Biology and Psych. from a previous College. I took a few years of algebra in High School - but took Accounting in College and last month I was required to take take their Algebra placement exam - I studied everynight for a month. I was a wreck but somehow placed 20 classes above the required class. I've been out of school for 20 years, so I was feeling pretty good about all of this - until now.

We were told that the TEAS (NET) Exam had a little bit of everything on it and until yesterday when (I opened the study guide) was not too worried about it. Unlike a lot of schools I've heard people mention on the boards - we aren't required to have already taken A&P, Microbiology, etc. (they are included in the actual Nursing Program)- at least not to be considered for Admission to the Fall Program. I took A&P and lots of other medically related courses in the Navy in Hospital Corps School - but hey, that was 20 years ago - some of that info. has drained out of my brain.

Anyway, after looking through the study guide (which I plan on going over with a "fine tooth comb" for the next month) - I feel pretty comfortable with everything except the "Life Science" Section. There are quite a few questions in that section about DNA - something we weren't taught anything about 20 years ago and it's really got me worried. As I said I plan on study like a mad woman for the next month until the test - but a month isn't really enough time to learn all about DNA and a lot of other science related material I'm very rusty on.

To those of you who have taken this test - are you graded on all parts the same - or is science a huge portion of your grade? I'm one of many who are going for this at this school - minimum you have to make on this test to still be in the running is the 40th percentile but you know there will be some in the 90+ percentile - so I have to do fantastic on this exam to stand a chance - it's the make it or break it factor. Besides the study guide, does anyone have any suggestions for crash courses in science to help with the exam? I'm so worried, so any suggestions at all would be appreciated. Thanks for listening. I took the NET a little over a year ago. All that it mostly consisted of was math & reading. I don't remember any science type questions. Perhaps I took a different type of entrance test than you will be taking. Be confident, you'll do well!

Jen, Thanks for your response. Hopefully I'm just overly worried about this and it will go well. Your quote above is "beautiful".

I honestly can't think of another job where you could not only be present when a new life comes into this World - but be the hand someone holds when they are leaving the World. A humbling experience in either case (and all that comes in between) and absolutely something I want to be part of. Thank You, SusanNC

That is a good point Susan...about the hand holding. It makes me really think about one of my patients from clinical yesterday. A 17 yr old that had brain trauma from a car accident. She was very resistant & difficult when I started that morning, but with a lot of hand holding & gentle talking to her throughout the day, she was kissing my hand before I left that night. I've thought about her a lot today & really hope that she is able to one day get back to a normal teen-age life. I'm glad that I was given the opportunity to care & comfort her for a day.

With an outlook like yours, you should most definitely be a nurse. Study hard for the entrance exam. And don't forget to let us know how you did. When do you take the test?

The NET does not have any sections on Life Science or DNA or anything like that. All it is is reading comprehension and high school level math. If your test has science and other stuff, then it's not the NET.

I also wondered if you have a different test. Do you have the study guide they suggested? The NET I took was basic algebra and reading comprehension, and that was it.

The test I'm supposed to take is called TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) - required test for entrance into their Nursing Program. I thought it was probably very similar to the NET - just under a different name, but I guess it's not.... Susan
