A client is admitted to the hospital with complaints of frequent loose, water stools; anorexia, malaise, and considerable weight loss during the past month. Lab findings indicate leukocytosis and elevated sedimentation rate. The RN recognizes that the presenting symptoms in conjunction with the lab findings could be indicative of:

1. The consistent, long-term use of irritant-type laxatives

2. An emotional response that has resulted in physical symptoms

3. Systemic response of the body to a localized inflammatory process

4. Poor dietary practices that have resulted in an alteration of bowel function.

Also, tell me what subjects you need me to focus on!

I will say #3. Got mixed up on the terms and while cleaning I had a light bulb moment and double checked trusty ole dictionary!! :smackingf

#2-no info on emotional state-don't read into the question.

#3-you would have an increase in WBC with infection.

#4-could be, but I like #1 better in this situation.

Aneroo, I like the way that you are doing it now-kind of "Hodge Podge". At this point all subjects are good to focus on. Maybe some Peds thrown in and cardio, those are my weak points. Thanks for asking.

Leukocytosis is an increased white count. Along with the elevated sed rate I vote for #3.

#3.

The leukocytosis and elevated sed rate leads me to suspect a parasitic infection - but the findings would be the same with any localized inflammatory process.

3- Correct. With an inflammatory response the body increased its production of WBC's and fibrinogen, which increases the WBC count and blood sedimentation rate.

other answers would not affect the WBC or sedimentation rate. See QOD for Saturday!
