I just received an invitation from my school to join. It costs $55 (a one-time fee for membership at all levels). Is there any benefit to membership besides just an ego thing? I imagine it might look good on resumes, huh?

I'd go for it. Seems like it's a nationally recognized honor and you've obviously worked hard to earn it. Certainly can't hurt on a resume or if/when you apply for further education.

I just joined Phi Theta Kappa in Florida at my CC. I was wondering the same thing. KLONE does PTK show up on your transcripts? i havent been involved in anything yet and wanted to know if it would help my chances of getting into the nursing program or help on resumes. i already paid the fee. :uhoh21:

I think any kind of positive organizations look good on a resume. I say go for it.

From what I understand, it depends on your individual school's policy. I got a letter directly from my school, and it says that in addition to getting the key pin and membership card, there will also be a notation of membership on my diploma and transcripts, so I imagine it will only help for transferring if you want to go to a BSN program after graduation.

I've been invited to join three times and I have finally decided to put out the $65 dollars to become a member. I hear it is good on the resume. I also really like the

collars they get to wear with their graduation robes. I heard that they have some

scholarship opportunities for members.

Go for it. You worked really hard for those grades and deserve the recognition!! I haven't regretted it at all. At out CC, if you participate in some of the activities they will pay for a part of your nursing pin when you graduate. They also pay for your stole that you get to wear at graduation. I don't know if you are a Mom or have any younger people that look up to you, but could be something that they aspire to work towards when/if they go to school.

Congrats on PTK

I never got invited to join PTK at my community college since I wasn't an on-campus student. I thought that was a pretty crappy policy. :o

Anyway...

I'd say join (if you can afford the dues). I'm joining a honor society on my campus now (and hope to get invited to join the nursing-specific one next year)... it is an expense and might be a good resume padder, but it's more of a personal achievement (patting myself on the back) sort of thing for me.

The fact that I was a member did help me get a scholarship. It paid off for me.

I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa and at my school it is on your transcript. If you are an active member, you also get to wear a special stole at graduation. If you plan on getting a BSN, it is a MAJOR advantage. The example we were given is that Texas A & M gives PTK members an AUTOMATIC scholarship of like $5,000 a semester (my figure may be a little off, I am trying to remember back 1.5 years) IF you do like 30 or 40 hours of PTK work (volunteer, fund raising, etc.). There are many, many, many other schools that offer these scholarships for continuing education. I would check with your PTK advisor for more specifics or http://scholarships.ptk.org/ for really good info about what it will do for you in the future. IMO, it is money well spent.

Hope that helps.

I am still trying to figure out the benefit! I became a member and last year was the secretary. Only the officers showed up to the meetings. The president decided increase the joining fee in order to offer free lunch to get people to attend. Then about 5 people would show up. The only thing they do is help student senate sign up volunteers for the 2 blood drives the school has every year...that's it. My class schedule conflicted with the meetings so I had to give up my position. Now they tell us that if we want a stole for graduation, it will cost $46.00. That is more than the membership cost!!!:angryfire I am sure that it will look good on a resume but so far, the only thing I have received is many PTK credit card offers :uhoh21: NO thanks!

I was president of my chapter last year and it has many advantages. I remember after becoming a member how exited I was to just get my first letter from a university. See, they send your name to a database that the university's subscribe to. They they send you letters trying to get you to apply to their school and it could be one that is right down the street or across the country. PTK is also recognised internationally so there might be international scholarships available (I think they are typically about $4000 a year unless I'm mistaken)

Plus, that active membership and the community projects we did I was able to put on a scholarship application which helped me get the scholarship. Committies just eat up community service stuff.

The only harm in it is the $55 app. fee and some time being an active member.

I say go for it (and of course I'm not biased in any opinion here :) )
