Phi Theta Kappa Membership?

I just received an invitation from my school to join. It costs $55 (a one-time fee for membership at all levels). Is there any benefit to membership besides just an ego thing? I imagine it might look good on resumes, huh?

Membership in my school is $80 plus you have to do some fund-raising (to sell some stupid candy bars). We don't have time to do this, so people submitting their own money instead, and it makes cost of membership rise to almost $200. That's why I didn't join yet.

I went to school for 2 years at a community college in AZ and I joined Phi Theta Kappa, I only paid one time though, I think it was $50-55. That's the only time I paid, and I was never really active with it because I ended up transferring to a 4 year college in TX. Now I'm about to graduate with my BSN, but my question is ... would this be something I should include on my resume?

Yes PTK can be on your resume for the rest of your life. It is an ACHIEVEMENT, so it would be added to that section of your resume (depends on the type of resume you are writing if it includes that category). I was a member of PTK in my CC also, and was also an online student even though I was in the same city the only time I went on campus was for meetings, financial aid, or registration. Being in PTK MANY universities offer scholarships to just PTK members. There was another university in my city that would pay 75% tuition for being a PTK member. That's the main reason why I joined just to get my school paid off for free, but decided to change majors and they don't have that major there. PTK is on your CC transcripts but not on your transcripts at the University level since its just a 2 year degree level honor society. BTW its an INTERNATIONAL HONORS SOCIETY. So if you wanted to go to school out of country you can get scholarships for being a member. I only paid $55 dollars and found it very valuable, just like Deans List (if your in PTK you should AUTOMATICALLY be in Deans List and they even have a NATIONAL year book of Deans list people) and being in Whos Who in college. Those things look GREAT when you apply to the BSN program. PLUS PTK can write a RECOMMENDATION for you saying that you are part of the program just add that to your college application. :mad:

By the way, what you would do with being a member of dean's list? Can you put it in your resume or something?

The only upside to ours that I see is it being on your transcripts, and you can use it on your resume which looks good. I was sent an invitation to join, which shocked me after last semester...but I didn't join because I couldn't afford the dues. I say if you can afford, go for it. At least it looks good on your transcripts.

I joined . I think it helped my acceptance into my ADN program. (Hopefully I can maintain my GPA long enough to remain a member when I transfer for my BSN.) :)

So far our chapter is participating in "Feed a Body, Feed a Mind" an initiative designed to help alleviate hunger and illiteracy in our community;American Cancer Relay for Life walk; USA today readership program and a couple of fundraisers. We've also had poor turn out at our meetings. We have about 200 members but only about 10 or under show up.

I witnessed the winter graduation ceremony at my college, and the PTK members really stood apart from the rest of the graduates. They each recieved special recognition during the ceremony, it was cool.

I'm still looking for a scholarship of somekind, but since I'm not young, financially needy, single or ethnic , I'm having a hard time.

I think PTK could be worth your time

I am a member of PTK at our community college. Lat year I was secretary. I don't have a lot of time to go to meetings, the schedule never works out, but last year I graduated with my LPN and it was nice being able to have the collar,along with the honors stole, I felt so proud! I will be wearing it again this year, it is a nice recognition for your accomplishments.

The scholorships that are available if you tranfer to a 4 year institution are awesome and vary per institution. But even if right now you don't think it is something you will ever do, still go for PTK, because you never know what the future holds, you could change your mind in 5 years!

At our school, no. You just have to have completed a minimum number of credits (I think it's 24).

Here it's 12 :) I was looking at the PTK website and linked to the info for my school. Found out my A&P lecturer is one of the 4 advisors, as well as my algebra teacher. I just got a wonderful letter of recommendation for a scholarship from my A&P teacher (she is such a sweet woman). I am really excited to learn that these ladies are on the committee :)
