OT soon to be unemployed

well rumors have been circulating for months that our processing facility would be closing. Last night, the regional manager went out to dinner w/ our managers and one of the supervisors. This supervisor came back and spread the news that we are going to be closing March 6th. THis is some time away but they will be eliminating people bit by bit and I had counted on this job to get me through radiology school. To make matters worse, my husband also works here with me, but thankfully, he will be done with school next spring so he wasn't as dependant on this job as I am/was, but it still sucks. I don't know what to do. I guess I just wanted to vent. Thanks for listening.

Angela,

I'm not sure what it is like in Kentucky but in the State of Pennsylvania you can apply for un-employment online. I did and never once had to go to an un-employment office. True the first week you do not recieve benefits because they consider it "grace period" where you 'may' get called back to work.

I applied on-line and chose automatic deposit. I received my benefits the second week of un-employment and never once had to wait for it.

Definately apply the VERY first day you are un-employed or hours decrease.

Check online and see what info. you can gather from the internet. Then what ever you have questions on give them a call or go to the office.

okay so if I go and put my unemployment appl in now, but I am not laid off until March, then when do the benefits kick in? Are you saying that if I don't apply until March, that I won't get benefits until May? I hate this, I have never had to deal with anything like this before.

I would check for information online.

In PA I applied via online the day that I was laid-off. I was sent some more information in the mail and a booklet on how to dial in every two weeks to confirm with the agency that I was still un-employed.

I had my benefits automatically deposited into my checking account.

I never waited for benefits to hit my checking account. The second week I was un-employed I started receiving payments. I never once had to go to an un-e,ployment office or speak with anyone at the office.

If you can, I would go the "computerized" route. It seems to be much much faster.

angelac1978 & colleen10:

- In Colorado, I applied a week after I was laid off.

- It took them 2 months before I got my first check. Basically,

was paid for the previous 7 weeks in one lump sum.

- The main thing...you will get your $$, but you may have to wait

for that initial check. Also, need to file the day you get laid off

as that is the day they start calculating your benefits from.

Remember, you do not get benefits the first week you are

unemployed. This is considered a "free" week.

- Yes, in most states you can do this online.

- Yes, you will get a ton of paperwork. Make sure you read everything as some of it needs to be signed and mailed (via post office) back to them.

- It's a big pain --- but you do whatcha gotta do.

thanks colleen. I didn't know you could work and draw unemployment at the same time. I may do that, it would be great if I could get a job as a radiology assistant, I could probably get tuition reimbursement too. My husband has pretty much decided to take a transfer if they offer it to him. He only has one class to go and he doesn't think it will be that hard to get into a local university and take it. I'm in a different situation because I don't think I can transfer radiology programs. If all else fails, I could move in with my parents while I finish school.

Hi, Angela! I know you're in Bowling Green, but you could drive down here and work with me. ;) We are hiring Rad Techs at my hospital, and I'm in good with a couple of the HR people here. You might even get the rest of your schooling paid for. PM me if you want more info.

that's very tempting! we may be moving to louisville in the spring, or at least somewhere in between, like e-town. My husband will be done with school in May and he wants to work for the nat'l weather service and they have an office in louisville. I think that is saving my sanity right now, since we both work for the postal service and we will both be unemployed in March. We've basically decided that wherever he gets a job, he is going to take it and then go from there. We are hoping that the HR people that they are bringing in to help us transition can maybe help him with the weather service since they are both government entities.

Right now our plan is to work, work, work and save as much $$$ as we can. We also have some financial aid residual money that will be coming in January, along with our tax return. They will be slowly eliminating positions but this will be based on our performance numbers and luckily my husband and I have some of the highest numbers at this facility so we will probably have jobs until March, however, we are preparing for the possibility of being unemployed in November.

They are also bringing in representatives from the unemployment dept to help us file. Since almost 300 people may possibly be filing, I think it will be easier for them to come to us than vice versa.

So basically we are treading water right now. At our big meeting last night, several people were angry, my husband included and they were able to voice that anger which I think helped him to get past this. I know it has helped him to get his butt in gear and take school seriously because now we have nothing to fall back on.

I want to say thanks to everyone who has responded to this, just "talking" this out has helped me tremendously.
