NYU Accelerated BSN Fall 2010

Nursing Students General Students

Hi everyone!

I just received my acceptance letter to NYU's Accelerated BSN program for Fall 2010. I just wanted to reach out to other accepted students so I thought I'd start a thread! I haven't decided whether or not to accept the offer because of $, relocation, and other things. I have so many questions that I don't know where to start but feel free to share your thoughts!

That's how many applicants they had, but it's not how many they accepted. I believe they accepted something around 130-150.

That is not the total number for the College of Nursing; it is more like the total number for all NYU applicants. I read a post on college confidential where students who applied to CAS also claimed that their rejection letter stated there were 5,300 applicants this semester.

Hey you guys, I am currently in NYU I started fall of last year. If you guys have any questions I would be happy to answer!

Hey Blackhorizon,

Thanks for allowing us to pose questions. What were your academic credentials like prior to getting accepted into NYU? Are you paying for the tuition out of pocket? If not, how is the financial assistance? How do you like the program? How difficult are the classes and the clinicals? What is your experience like with the clinicals?

Thanks!

Jason

Blackhorizon & any other NYU ABSN Students or Grads:

Thanks for checking in. What can you tell us about the rotations and the prospects of your finding employment? I have been accepted to NYU and now must choose between it and a state school with tuition about 10% that of NYU. Do you know whether any of the members of your class will secure positions in critical care units in the City? I want to become a CRNA, and so getting ICU experience is critical. Any handle on the reputation of NYU within the City's finest hospitals or at Masters programs?

Note: I am familiar with the costs of living in NYC and there are many other blogs out there where that information can be obtained. I am only trying to evaluate whether the NYU name and preparation will be worth about $60ktotal/$700month in student loans given my goals. I would like to settle in the City and pursue a nurse anesthetist education and career in NYC.

Do you have any advice for me as to how I might accomplish an evaluation? It is frustrating, given the amount of the investment, that nursing schools do not provide employment information as law and business schools do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A PM would be greatly appreciated as I would like to speak or email offline with an NYU student or grad of the ABSN program.

Thanks!

Natalie, I went to SUNY school with something else and transferred to CUNY for nursing. I graduated in December 2009, got my license in March.

I have about 13,000 federal loan from SUNY for room and board but I paid cash for CUNY. ($1500 per semester. =)

I personally visited the hospital that I had my externship last summer and figured that not only they're not interested in new grads but they were planning on layoff on doctors and nurses.

It took me about a week to realize the severity of the job market and I started applying everywhere in the nation.

I flew to Arkansas and Kentucky for interviews.

I accepted a telemetry position in Arkansas and I'm moving in a month.

You have a fabulous price tag for prestigious Georgetown.

Good Luck.

Dominica,

Go to a state school.

NYU accepts too many students, classes done in huge lecture halls (for nursing!).

Does not prepare students for NCLEX or clinical skills.

My cousin works at NYU Medical Center in ICU (she graduated from CUNY school) and recently a new grad from NYU in her unit resigned herself after her supervisor repeatedly commented on her performance.

Her supervisor was also my cousin's supervisor and said how unprepared the new grad was on the clinical setting.

If you want to become a CRNA, then you need to think about the grad school as well, how the heck are you gonna afford all that money?

Everything on loans? Why? When you have the option of affordable tuition?

What matters is that you have the degree and license when you're looking for the job. Going to school in NYC does not mean you're gonna work here.

You just don't know how terrible the situation is because you didn't actively go for job hunting yet.

It all depends on the government and economy, not your excellence in nursing or diligence.

For your first RN job, you gotta go anywhere who accepts you.

That mentality of staying in one specific region makes it even more difficult.

You can be picky when you have some decent experience.

I hope you make a wise decision and avoid tremendous amount of loans.

I went to CUNY nursing, and all my faculty were genuinely devoted to students.

It had some flaws, but overall I couldn't ask for more.

Good Luck to you. =)

Thanks for your well-considered opinion; I sincerely appreciate your thoughts and think they are generally on-target.

Are there any other folks out there who would defend a decision to go +/-70k in debt for the NYU ABSN? Would love to hear from any current students or graduates. Surely, many have gone to NYU for professional betterment rather than a desire to live in the Big Apple for 15 months. I'm interested in how the BEST students fare.
