hello,

does anyone have any details on how to get your hospital to pay for your nursing training. i met a girl who is going to towson college in balto md. Saint joes hospital is paying for her school in exchange for a year of work.

how can i do that?

thanks

I am in a program where everyone in my class is sponsored by a local hospital. We had to interview with them and after we the students and they the hospitals agreed, the hospitals pay for our schooling in exchange for 2-3 years work after graduation. I love it. I had a say in which hospital I interviewed with from a list of 5. We can opt to pay back the "loan" instead if we want. We also agreed not to work while we are in school. This might not work for everyone but in my case, I knew what I was getting into.

I also was able to make a list of hospitals I wanted to interview at. I chose all the HCA hospitals closest to where I lived at the time. I was chosen by my first choice hospital...same city I lived in.

However, they told me I didn't necessarily have to work at that hospital. They told me as long as there are openings, I could choose any HCA hospital. (...and I've never seen a hospital w/o job openings.)

Also, we didn't have to sign a contract saying we wouldn't work. Are they adding in any cost of living into your loan?

I just think of it as a scholarship, with a job waiting. :)

I work for a hospital ( at a satellite clinic), and if you work full time, you can get up to $1,000 a semester tuition reimbursement.

No they didnt add any money for living. We also have to pay for books, parking, uniforms, etc but this is a 18 month BSN program so its not as long as the usual program of 3 years. Since we have to agree to this, we all knew what was involved and I rather be broke for 18 months than have a little spare change and do then program in 3 years. A few of my classmates had to ask for more financial aid-whatever it takes.

Kaiser Hospital have program like you mention, i know a person who was on the 2nd year of the program and kaiser hire her with a nurse salary here in N.California of course there is a limitation on your duty until you pass your license.

Fun2Care, Good for you! I think you found a sweet deal and made it work for you. One other point to keep in the back of your mind -- if you DO decide to leave, and paying off the remainder of your loan is required, you CAN work paying the balance of the existing loan into your offer from your next employer. They may or may not agree to this, but things like salary, accrued weeks of vacation, length of preceptor training period, loan forgiveness contract buy-outs, etc., are regularly negotiated items.

I wondered about that. Thanks for the advice. :)

You have an awsome situation...I work in a hospital but they offer just tuition reimbursement of $750 per year, which helps a little.... :) What hospital are you working at??? and do you know if they have an affiliate hospital here in Boston

Yes, my situation is awesome, I will admit. I am also on the Baylor program, so I get all of this while only working 2 days a week (sat& sun).

Sorry, the closest hospital near Boston that is a part of my hospital corporation is in Dayton.

Luckyone: Yes, I live in Baltimore right now but am moving to Harford County(30mins North of Baltimore) next week. I got into Harford Community College's Nursing Program. I applied to CCBC but didn't get in. That's really cool that you're a hairdresser! What made you decide to change careers?
