Now that NS is actually coming.....How do you prepare?

Arrgggh... Now that I'm actually accepted for fall, I feel like I should be doing something to prepare myself for NS. The only things they (the administration) told us to do were complete the shot records & CPR class, & buy a white uniform.

I want to get my books & see the syllabi, buy a stethoscope & a blood pressure kit & etc, etc, etc... I have never worked as a CNA or anything medical, so I am afraid I will be woefully behind when it comes to basic procedures.

Does anyone have suggestions about what I should be doing? Reading certain books, practicing blood pressures, what?? I am married with a family & the more organized I am, the less stress I have. If there are things I can do to help myself prior to the start of classes, it would be great to do them over the summer.

Thanks!

Personally, I'd advise you to enjoy as much time as you can with your family. Nursing school is going to take up a lot of you.

It can't hurt to shop for a stethoscope. Your school will mail you a list of things you'll need before your first semester. As far as studying, if you insist, learn dosage calculations. There are a lot of good books out there.

I made the mistake of buying a BP kit. Never needed it. It was provided by the school and the hospitals in clinicals. So wait for the list. Don't buy more than you need.

I am actually wondering about the medical records collection.

I was raised in a different country and I doubt my mother has kept my medical records from then, so I really don't have a tangible physical record of the majority of the vascinations I had as a kid.... How do you suggest I go about obtaining proof that indeed I was immunized for all that suff? Can my doctor take my blood sample and determine what I am immune to already? Sorry if this sounds stupid but I am trying to wrap my mind around it and just don't know where to start.

But then again, I only got my acceptance letter a day before yesterday :D I am still digesting the good news :):clown:

Not a stupid question at all. Not that many adults have access to all their childhood illnesses and immunizations.

You can ask your doctor for titres for your immunizations. It's a simple blood draw that tells you if you're immune.

well we were assigned reading to have done and ready for testing when we showed up for the first day of class. So if you can get ahead on reading a bit do that, but otherwise clean your house throughly (because you won't get to it again throughly until the term or semester is over.) figure out meals that are quick and easy and buy easily assembled lunches (yogurts fruits granola bars etc... stuff you can just throw into a bag and leave). Other than taht rest and take it easy because the stress is going to come sooner than you think.- smk a current first semester student.

sleep now! :roll make sure you take some sort of notebook with paper in it to write notes on and hold handouts because you'll be doing and getting both on your first day of nursing class.

i just posted some links to syllabi for nursing fundamental classes that i found on the internet. just for laughs you might want to see what some of the various nursing schools around the country have their nursing students doing in their first nursing class! follow this link:

I didn't have a record of my immunizations either. The Health Dept. took my word for it and filled in a shot record for me....no proof needed. Apparently this happens a lot. I thought it was odd, but what the heck. I know my mother took me for all my shots.

Like others said, enjoy time with your family. Get your house cleaned and organized...and refresh on the cardiac and nervous system chapters of your A&P books. These will come to visit you again and again (many meds are based on the sympathetic, parasympathetic nervous systems, and of course there are many cardiac meds...). But most of all, enjoy the summer; it'll go by fast.

Congrats!

my advice is: get all your books/supplies, then REST AND RELAX AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!! Be lazy, read a bunch of books, spend time with your family and friends:lol2: :lol2: :lol2:
