Not so patiently waiting

Hello everyone! I've been browsing around allnurses.com for a few days now and I'm really loving it! I just recently got accepted to the BSN program in my school and will begin in the fall. I am so beyond excited! I think I check my email about 5 times a day for some kind of news about orientation. I'm sure I won't hear about that for a couple of months but I honestly can't wait. I wanted to ask you all for any suggestions on what I should do to better prepare for the program. My family owns a restaurant, that I manage, so I haven't had the time to get a job in a healthcare setting. I will be leaving the family business soon so I can focus on school and get some kind of experience in a hospital. I actually plan on volunteering at a local hospital in the next month or so.

Are there any type of entry level jobs I could get that might help me become more familiar with the medical field? I was also thinking of getting a CNA certification, but I don't exactly have the money to pay for that at the moment so that might not work out.

It's also been a few years since I took patho, so I'm definitely going to be reviewing that over the summer along with my A&P. Are there any books I could get and start reading to get a head start and be better prepared for nursing school? I want to go into the program as strong as possible! Especially since most of my classmates have been working in hospitals for a long time and my experience is zero.

I will be taking a nice vacation this summer too and enjoying what freedom I have left before school starts. I am just too excited to begin, it's all I can think about! Thanks in advance everyone. :)

Here's a book you can get to prepare for nursing school: Critical Thinking and Nursing Judgement by Alfaro-LeFevere; it's available on Amazon.com:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/s/ref=is_box_?k=critical+thinking+and+nursing+judgement

I have the 3rd edition; there are updated versions of this book; still a priceless read.

Best book that I received from an instructor in my PN program; helped me recharge for my BSN program; and STILL a good read when I was a LPN and as a RN still a great read for "thinking like a nurse."

Look at your hospital or nursing home websites & see if they have anything listed. Even just getting your foot in the door as a diet tech can turn into you being internally hired as a patient care tech down the road when you get your CNA.

And get this book! It is a big help for those nursing tests:

Test Success: Test-Taking Techniques for Beginning Nursing Students:Amazon:Books

Fundamentals Success is a great book for practicing NCLEX-style questions and learning how to think critically.
