Not Getting "A's"

Nursing Students General Students

I've seen this discussed but I'm wondering if other nursing students are dealing with this right now. I got an 85% on one exam and a 91% on another and I am still grappling with the fact that I got a "B" and an "A-". Part of me is okay with this but the perfectionist part is really angry/upset.

I don't mind the different grading scales, but I think it's kind of a joke when it comes time to apply for grad school. One school might be 90-100 for an A while mine is 93-100 for an A. Naturally those kids will have a GPA advantage if they are applying at the same time as me. If so many grad schools are going to weigh a lot of their decision on GPA then more schools should try to align their grading scales.

I started a topic about this before... I just finished my Fundamentals course with a B. It was the first B I'd ever gotten in my college career. I had a 91% in the class, and missed an A by two points! I'm not going to lie, it really stung. But I still know that I tried my hardest. Now that I know what to expect from nursing school tests, I'm hoping that I can get an A in my Med/Surg I class.

I totally understand and like all the other posters feel your pain. My program also has a 85% B and a 93% A. Our exams are 50 questions, so to get an A you have to miss 3 or less out of the 50 questions answered. It's painful, and as an A student coming into Nursing school, grappling with the potential for an 8 unit B on my transcript, definitely stings. I'm only 6 weeks into the first semester and am really trying to let go of the GPA anxiety, but still am studying like a demon to try for the A. I guess as the semester goes on I will either see how unrealistic it is for me, or see the level of work it is going to take to get there...

good luck to you and hang in there

Thank you all for your support. An F is a 70% at my school and for an A you have to get above 93%. I want to get into CRNA school (I have a minor in chemistry, two classes away from a degree in biochemistry) and it's a lot of pressure because I know you have to have a very excellent GPA to get in.

I have about a 3.89 in my other degree, with 16 semesters of classes including very difficult science classes. At my current school my grade is a 4.0 but it's hurt from 32 credits of college classes I took in high school while I was very sick and not really ready for college. I'm hoping the sheer mass of credits and A's will help me maintain above a 3.70.

Let me put it this way.... my GPA on its way down a mountain at full speed. :-\ Passing is 76% in our school and honestly, it's the only thing I'm hoping to get. Anything above that is extras.
