NLN Pre-Admission Exam (PAX-RN)

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Just took the PAX-RN yesterday. Man. I'm glad that's over.

Test started at 9 & it took 1/2 hour to go over instructions & fill out the "application" part (name, ss#, address, testing site, etc), then another 10 minutes was taken to hand out the testing booklet & go over instructions for the first part which was...

Verbal.

Wasn't too tough at all. I breezed through it pretty fast. Only had a couple questions with words I wasn't 100% sure on, so I'm certain I did ok in that section. The reading comprehension was a breeze as well.

Took a 10 minute break & then returned for the next section...

Mathematics.

Surprisingly, it wasn't nearly as tough as I thought it would be. Only bummer part was the no calculator rule, so everything had to be worked out by hand on scratch paper (which was provided for us). Luckily I got through the section completely just before time was called.

Another 10 minute break and on to the final section...

Science.

This was the HARDEST section of all. And I'm good at science. I've taken the biology series the first time I was in college. I've taken chemistry this year and A&P I so far. I've even had an intro physics course back when I first went to college. But they came up with some questions that I totally did NOT know. It amazed me how many physics questions were on the exam. It makes me wonder what the average score of nursing students is on that exam. I honestly do not know how I did on that section. It's the only one that has me concerned.

I'm glad it's over. I will find out in about 2 weeks how I scored. In order to be placed on the waiting list for our nursing program, we have to score above the 50th percentile nationally in all 3 sections. HOPEFULLY I did! If we don't make the grade, we'll either have to take the whole test again or take a class to make up for whatever section we didn't pass. I hope I pass ok, because it would seem strange to me to take an intro bio class after I've taken A&P (and got an A on the first class).

A coworker on mine took the NLN today and said the exact same thing you said about the Science part. She said there was about 10 question about A&P and the rest was Chemisty and Physics. Why is that? We don't even have to have thoses classes so why put them on an entrance exam. I am taking the test two weeks from today and she has really made me nervous. I hope both have scored high enough to get accepted into the program and I will be praying for myself. We have to get at least 100 out of 194 correct. Let us know how you did when you get your results and I will do the same. Good luck to you AmyLiz!

hi,

I am new to this site. I am taking the PAX-RN in a couple of weeks. I was recommended the Barron's book (How to prepare for the Nursing School Entrance Exam) but it seems rather easy and I was wondering if anyone is interested in selling the study guide.

i took the PSB-RN test back in Jan and the science section was HARD to me too...i actually had some biochem, and physic and patho on my test...i got an 81% but my verbal, reading and math i got mid to high 90's in. totally understand your frustration on that! i used the Nursing and Allied Health entrance exam review book by Marion Gooding and the Barrons guide to study with! hope you did well Amy!

Don't buy it...check it out of the library. My school library had a couple copies & so did my local public library! :)

I did do well...I got into the 99th percentile, so that was good news. I took the test back in September & had gotten my scores about a week or so later.

Thanks Amy and congrats!! Unfortunately, the New York Public Library does not have it so I decided to buy it.

Man someone was thread digging.

Got confused at first.

Funny thing is I thought the science was the easier of the two parts for myself, must be why you beat me by 4 percentage points ;)

LOL...it had been a looooong time since I had taken physics! And we didn't get along very well when I took it either. :rotfl: ..man, I couldn't stand that class!

i am glad you all got to do really well!!

man, i am so anxious!! The thing is i am a nurse in the UK but i have to start right from the beginning and this is the only chance i have. i don't wanna waste a year to retake it!!!

all i do during the day is review vocabulary, formulas (area, volume, etc) and science and i feel i am going to be asked something different.
