New Student! Scared! Please help...

Nursing Students General Students

I'm a brand new college student. I'm 24 years old and I havent been to school since I was 15 yrs. old. (tragedy in family, earned my GED.) I'm a single mom of a 4 year old----and quite frankly, I'm very nervous about this--but so excited! Does anyone have any positive advice for me for studying to be an RN?

hey mel, i think it depends on the school you go to. at my school, i made a plan of about how long it would take me to get my pre-reqs out of the way and what year i wanted to start the rn program, make some kind of plan with your nursing counselor and go see her/him every semester to help get you on your way, then when the time comes that you want to start the program you will be ready and you counselor can help. I planned for 2003, got most of my pre-reqs out of the way and my counselor helped alot. my school took 72 nursing students, i was #51. but i got in. so i think it depends on you and your school, how many they accept and to know when your ready, you dont want to pile up pre-reqs on top of nursing, try to get as many pre-reqs out of the way first. you can do it, it has been so well worth it, i feel good about my self, i'm proud of myself and trust me, the feeling i have of accomplish just this far is amazing. i didnt start till i was 30, with kids, working full time and going to school full time, plus husband, house and etc, you can do it girl, i have faith among all the other ladies and gents on this forum. keep your head up and be strong, when you feel your stressed, take a break, take a walk, cook something, i know that sounds funny but it realy does help. I'm here to help out with anything.

For me all I have to say is I will not fail and I don't. I work my fanny off and do the best I can but all the time I say "I will not fail." Besides my family would kill me if I failed but more the point I would never be able to live with myself if I failed. I know I can do it! and so can you!!! Good luck.

I was told yesterday that microbiology was HARD---and to make it one of the last classes I take before applying for Nursing School. HOw true is this? What about Pharmacology?

hey mel, i've heard the same about microbiology, i take it next summer. I always thought that if i could make it past chemistry i can pass anything. well i still believe that too. I am taking pharmacology in my nursing this semester so i will let you know later.

 WOW! I know you don't know me, but I am so totally proud of you. You may be starting a little later than high schoolers, but you are right with lots of us starting later. This is my second career, my first being a teacher. The great thing about you, is that you've matured some first, probably very driven, and a little more secure in yourself. So be proud of yourself, you are NOT ALONE!! You will do great! You have all of us for support, come here often! This is where I get almost all of my support.

God Bless, Heather

P.S. For studying ideas, look at the heading in stud nurs'g about flashcards, lot's of good info.

I am in the same boat you are. Since it's been years since I've taken any difficult classes, I am a little scared about getting through anatomy with a good grade. I plan to study my rear off when I am not working.

Good Luck!

Micro was *very* hard for me. It had something to do with combing chemistry (which I can't stand) with biology (which I love) and I had to study and stay focused. As long as you do that, you will pass.

First of all, congratulations on going back and doing what you want! I've said this before, and I'll say it again, the best advice I can give is to take it one day at a time! When I was in school, I would think about all the time I had left to finish, and it would seem impossibleand I would actually get depressed! But one day I decided to just make it through one day/one week at a time. Of course I kept my mind on my goal, which was ultimately to be an RN, but I got there in 'little bites'! LOL RagNZ said every paper she passes is a little closer to her goal, I thought that was a perfect attitude!! As far as going for LPN first or straight for RN, go for RN if that's what you want. In fact, where I went to school, I took the two year RN course, and was allowed to sit for my LPN boards after 3 semesters, as long as I took maternity in those first three semesters. I took my LPN boards as a "practice" and actually passed! I worked as an LPN for about 3 months before getting my RN, and it was GREAT experience! Others in my class did it too, which worked out perfectly for one person who had to temporarily drop fourth semester for personal reasons. And microbiology? It was tough, but I took it by itself and really found it to be quite interesting! I definitely wouldn't take it with another science, I don't think. Anyway, good luck, and keep coming back to the board!! The student section is a great support! :D

I just want to say how nice this forum is. I've been scared, excited, nervous, have butterflies and the whole kit and kaboodle, but coming here and reading that i'm not alone has really helped me out. I know that I can do it and achieve my goal just like everybody else. I just want to thank everyone for their kind words, compassion and advice and I will leave you with some advice my mom (who is a nurse) left me....each class is no different than the one you passed before.. whether its nursing or pre-reqs.. they all consists of hands-on, books and tests... if you can pass the one before then you will pass the ones in front of you... you are smart...you have made it this far...and I can't wait to see you graduate in May of 2005....

Like my mom said, i feel the same way about you all...keep the chin up..know that its all the same...you can do...and we as nurses will acclomplish alot. thanks again

have confideance in yourself. i also have a classmates who is 40 yrs old but we study enrolled nurse (asst. nurse). She get very good results.

She can do it, so can you!!

I thought Microbiology was easier (but still really tough mind you) than A & P. It's the Physio that kills me, and I will be taking the 2nd part of that, ick! Heather

You'll be fine.....

You're being such an awesome role model for your child.....

i'm proud of you!!!!!!!
