My first day...

Nursing Students General Students

Hello, Everyone!:balloons:

I've been bopping around this website, mainly in the pre-nursing forum. However, after today, I am officially a student nurse in an LPN program!

I'm Laurel--40 y.o. married mom, 2 children. This is my second career. (In my "previous life" I was a teacher).

I am attending a technical college, although I will earn an associate's degree when I am finished. The curriculum is standardized, and I have 19 credit hours. I am taking (along with the 31 other members of my cohort group) Med. Terminology, A&P, English and Nursing Foundations 1.

I spent 2 hours doing homework tonight--is that common? I guess it may be, for that many credit hours. I will go to class 4 days a week for the first 2 quarters, then 3 days of class/2 days of clinicals in quarters 3-4-5.

Just wanted to share about my day, and hopefully meet some of you! Thanks for listening!

Laurel

Hi! Welcome to nursing school! I hope you enjoy it. 2 hours a night isn't too bad.

congrats on your journey. it has been a long road for me, but soon I will be done! In hindsight it has all actually gone quickly.

good luck!

Hi studentnurse,

Congrats on your journey to becoming a nurse! I pray that it will be an exciting one!

I thought about going to school to become a teacher, as I was a special ed assistant at an elelmentary school, but working with that teacher and 2 other assistants and seeing what they were like totally turned me off of it. WAY too long of a story to go into here!!! I do have tons of respect for teachers, just not this particular one!!!

I will start NS in August in an ADN program, so I am just kind of passing time until then! As far as studying, I think that 2 hours a night is kind of common. From what I hear about my school, the average is about 2-3 hours, with more studying in between classes and on breaks!! And in line at the grocery store, and sitting in bleachers at the kids games, etc., etc..... LOL!!

Good luck in school. I'm sure with you will do just fine. You are at the right place for help and encouragement. BTW, welcome to the "General Student Forum." I haven't been able to let go of the pre-nursing forum yet! Guess I will always be partial to that one since I started there!!!

Laura,

Thanks for the good wishes!

Good luck to you! I'm sure you're excited for August to roll around!

Maybe we should chat and share "educational" experiences, LOL! It wasn't the children that drove me from education--it was the adults!

Think good thoughts for me on Monday--I have my first 3 tests!

Take care,

Laurel

Dear Natrgrrl,

I'm sure you are looking forward to your classes! Have you had medical terminology as a pre-req? I think it's even harder than A&P with all the memorization! I do enjoy learning, but it seems we're on the "fast track"! I guess that's why we'll have an associate's degree in 15 months!

Good luck to you!

I took some easy online only version that was only 3 credits. I loved it. But I hear the regular class is HARD.

Oh, honey. Two hours a night doing homework is nothing. :lol2: It's those 10 hours of never-ending reading that kill you. :) Welcome to nursing school!!:monkeydance:

Hi Laurel,

Thank you for the well wishes also! And good luck to you on your first 3 tests.

Yes, I loved working with the kids, especially our kiddos, they are just so sweet and are starved for attention, being special ed. Anyway, it was definitely the adults who were the problem. And since I didn't agree with how they were acting, I was the bad person. Oh well, I am better off away from there!! I would have probably killed someone if I didn't resign!! Just kidding...sorta! There was some abuse going on there and when nothing was done about it, I knew that it wass time to leave, or I would have been in some serious trouble hurting those that were hurting the children. Needless to say, things have been watched a lot more closely.

So, yes, I can understand your feelings on how things went at the school. And where I am at, there is absolutely no support from the administration. Public school is supposed to be a place for learning, and supposed to be all about the children, but not around here.

Sorry, off topic now. Sorry to vent about our public schools, but...!!!

All the best in your new career, and anytime you want to chat and share stories, you just give me a holler. You can PM me or my website address is at the bottom by my signature. I have a link on there for my email. I'm sure that we can swap a ton of stories!!!
