Made it through the first week of nursing school

Nursing Students General Students

Well almost, I have one more day. It's funny, in the Pre Nursing Student Section I made a post many months ago for those of us starting now and how excited I was and how I would be here my first day to share it with everyone and so forth and so on.

So here it is Thursday and I am finally finding I have a small ounce of energy to come make my post and only because someone asked me in the other forum or else I would have probably just waited until this weekend.

It has been a good week, I am mainly so tired and stuff because I am a night person and I am adjusting to waking up at 6 a.m. every morning and trying to go to bed early and having class every day all day. That has been by far the biggest struggle. I don't have to be up at 6 every day but I figured it would be better to stick to a routine for me and my youngest kid that just started childcare as well. Anyway, also to get parking you have to get there early and I mean REALLY EARLY, our school had a 31% increase in students and parking is horrific so I get to school early and can study or what not on days my classes don't start first thing.

Monday we had Orientation, we had a drawing thing and I won (along with like 15 other students) and I picked a book called "How to Survive and Maybe Even Love Nursing School, A Guide FOR students BY students."I haven't started reading it yet but it looks good.

We meet our clinical instructors and found out where we will do our Clinicals which first semester will be long term care. My clinical site will be about 10 mins from my house so that is nice. They tried to group people by their home addresses. We have a huge class size, biggest they have ever done and it's 50 students. Thankfully for most labs and math classes we are in 2 groups so only our Fundamentals and Pharmacology lecture classes will have all of us.

We meet all the nursing instructors and they all seem really great, the ones we have had doing Fundamental lectures have just been awesome and so pleasant and seem like they truly want to see us succeed. It's a two person team and both are currently going for their masters right now so they say how they feel what we are going through and it has helped them more. For example, one lady is trying something new and telling us what PAGES and paragraphs to focus our reading on instead of saying just read chapter 1 and 2. She says to just skim the rest and focus on the things she highlights and she is very thorough.

We also have so much free help from our Learning Opportunity Center that they came in and talked to us about that honestly if a student is determined to succeed there is no reason they can't. We have the Math learning lab, we have a Pharm Drop in study thing if you need help with Pharm, we have free tutoring from 5 RN's, free counseling and even couple counseling if you need it, stress management, test anxiety work shops etc. etc. all free so the help is there if you seek it out.

So anyway, so far I don't feel overwhelmed, but it's only the first week. Lecture has been good, the math teacher for Dosage and Calc seems wonderful and she says she has never had a student that was passing her class not pass the Dosage and Calc exam within the 3 tries at the 100% required.

We start Pharm next week and had our first lab today. It was simple stuff, they said today was mainly the stuff you learn in the CNA classes so for the CNA's in our group it would just be review.

So that was about it, I get home and I am so tired that my kids are freaked out that mom is ready for bed before them, especially since I was always going to bed around 3 in the morning. With my kids starting school last week this week was also back to school night at 2 schools and at my sons middle school it lasted until 9:30 and had first foot ball games and so on, so yea I will use this weekend to recharge and hopefully my body gets more accustomed and the new sleep cycle gets easier as the weeks go on.

Oh we also have a nursing club for the National Student Nurses Association. I am joining that, it looks like a lot of fun and support and a good foot in, our school is trying to start the club up this semester so hopefully there is enough interest to keep a local chapter but NSNA (hope I got that right) will be having a convention in Co Springs in Oct. and I am hoping to go.

So that was my first week as a nursing student, minus tomorrow. but tomorrow is a pretty lite day, after I am going to the spa and getting a facial LOL

Sorry for any major typos and stuff I am beat.

Just finished my second week!

:heartbeatcongrats on all of the nursing students finishing their 1st and 2nd weeks!!!

i finished my 2nd week today---wow....lots of work!!! just when you think, " how in the world am i going to get all of this done?" you get it done. i guess for me, what i've learned in these 2 weeks is that you have to be organized, concentrate on what is due first and finish it, and get some sleep! the first week i hardly slept, up all night reviewing for math quizzes, assessment terms, etc...i felt overly stressed. this week, i made sure i had at least 6-7 hours of sleep each night and it did make a difference.

my instructor is fantastic, so that definitely helps matters!

also, i've never used a voice recorder in the past for pre-reqs. i did buy one for this program and have to say it has helped me. i listen to the lectures as i drive home from school, or before i go to sleep, i'm also less stressed taking notes, just knowing i have a back up. sometimes you just miss what is said.

i am terrified about clinicals of course...also getting checked off next week for initial assessments...but just take one day at a time!!!

i am also learning that i may not be a candidate for large study groups...for me what seems to work is one on one..or even 3 people max to bounce things off of.

i am ready for this long weekend..that's for sure!!! ( although it will be filled iwth reading text books :)

good luck to all of you :)

I'm almost done with my second week.

My first week went OK. It was basically just introduction to the courses. Then we had to hurry up and learn vital sign assessment in order to do the check offs on Wednesday and Friday. Well, I have to repeat mine because I need more practice. I really didn't practice as much like I should have because it seemed self-explantory, but the teacher I had revealed all the flaws. Not only mine, but anyone else she had either. Basically anyone who had her had to repeat. One girl told her she was wrong! LOL But she makes us feel uncomfortable, unconfident, and nervous about what we're doing. I had serious brain farts. Then I got frustrated and cried in the bathroom. Yep. Nice, huh?

I know how she operates now and will just have to anticipate she will always be mean and get it done. She said herself that she had fun giving us a hard time. Crazy woman. :uhoh3:

Glad some of ya'll had a good first 2 weeks.

i hope nextes week is better for you!!!

i too, had serious brain farts...i mean, my mind would go completely blank when asked a question...i felt pretty inadequate. but we are students and we will learn. just take it day by day and lots of deep breathes!

One thing I think we're all learning: One thing at a time.

Specializes in None yet!.

Congrats on making it through the first week!

I start on the 8th and like you I am a night person. I've been trying to get onto a normal sleep schedule but I'm so used to staying up past 2 in the morning it's been hard.

We start our clinicals sometime in early October, I'm not sure of the exact date yet but it's going to be on Thursday and Friday mornings.

Good luck to everyone! Let's all keep each other posted!!!

Let me tell you, getting up super early and having long days will cure that. LOL No matter what time I start school I still get up at 6, even if we start at 8 or 10. On clinical days it will have to be earlier. Anyway, since doing this come 9 o'clock I am so ready for bed. My insomnia has been cured for sure!!!

I start on the 8th! Well technically the 9th because I don't have class on Tuesday :) Reading about your week has made me feel a little better.

I've been bouncing between excited and nervous out of my mind LOL I'm also a night owl - it's 2am and I'm reading my first chapter of fundamentals before I go to bed. I'm going to try to get up early all this weekend. This is my weekend off so it should be easy - I just need to kick myself in the butt to get started!

I got all giddy this afternoon when my stethoscope arrived. I've been listening to my cat's heart LOL She's angry about it.

I finished my second week yesterday. During our second week we had 3 exams, a pop quiz, and two skills check offs, I figure after a week like that, I can surely survive just about anything :)

I record all of my lectures, but I've not actually listened to any of them yet. I learn pretty well just by listening, plus a lot of Fundamentals has been review it seems like. I like to know that I have the recording there if I need it though, that helps me to be able to concentrate better and not be worrying about every word that comes out of my teacher's mouth during lecture.

I think the biggest thing I've learned so far is to prioritize! I might have a million different things that need worked on, but if my priority is to study for the exam Thursday, then I'm going to do that, and the other things can wait until after that exam. I don't know, it's working for me so far, and it helps me from feeling too overwhelmed.

I think that knowing it's not a competition anymore helps a lot too. If I can't memorize every single bit of what MIGHT be on a lecture exam, I don't HAVE to get an A, I can get lower because passing is what matters. Now of course, the first time I get something less than an A I will be crushed, but I'm trying not to think about that just yet :)

HAHA that is too funny, the sleep adjustment has been hard but funny enough, getting up at 6 and sitting at school all day I am more then ready to go to bed at a decent time. Shoot it was Friday yesterday and I headed up to bed at 9:30 to get ready. ON A FRIDAY NIGHT. HAHA!!!!

Nursing school has for sure cured my insomnia (although some nights I wake up a lot but thankfully I don't stay awake I just hate having my REM sleep disrupted LOL)

Doing all the Pre Reqs I know how important sleep and diet are so I have made it my number 1 priority for nursing school.
