LPN program at Dutchess BOCES

Hi everyone, so I'm currently an RN student at Dutchess Community College in my clinicals. However, I'm not doing too well and am really thinking about going the long route. I'm thinking about getting my LPN through Dutchess Boces and then doing an RN bridge program. Can anyone tell me how Boces is??? For an example, DCC RN clinicals only have 2 quizes, midterm and final. So, if you don't do well on one quiz you're pretty much dead in the water. Can someone who has done the lpn program at Dutchess Boces tell me: (roughly) how many tests there are, what type (multi-choice, fill-in etc), what kind of support or help does the staff offer, what is the fail rate, do you get a lot of clinical time, stuff like that. Thank you so much!! Any advice is appreciative.

It's not any easier, really. I had some ulster boces LPN students and I was shocked at how intense their program is. Can you maybe talk to your instructors and try to make a plan to get you through your RN? Don't give up! The LPN programs in our area may be shorter but it is still very difficult to get through.

I went to my instructor to ask for some advice, like study tips, what to focus on etc. and she said "My only advice to you, is to drop out". That really put a very bad taste in my mouth, I thought teachers wanted to help their students. I can handle the material, I'm just looking for a program that has more exams and more of a staff that are willing to help and teach.

Try ulster boces. I have heard some things about Dutchess Boces, but I have not experienced them personally. In the LPN program you will have lecture 3x a wk, and clinical 2x a wk for about 6 months. Then the last half you will gave clinical 3x wk, and lecture 2 x a wk. In the first 6 mos you will have average 1 -2 tests a week. The second half 2 sometimes 3 tests a week. You will have to pass a med test, or you can't continue. You will have clinical homework that will be due the next clinical week. You will have reading assignments, that must be typed, mandatory lab hrs for every quarter that can only be done after school, a major project for certain units, lecture 3times a week, reading to be prepared for the lecture, first aid,CPR, and community service hours that must be done on your OWN time by a specified date. Make up tests are only done after school, so if are sick DRAG your self in to take the test, it will save you some grief later on. Not to mention the homework and review for tests, and make sure you show up, if you have poor attendance you could be let go from the program. I have been told that it is worth driving to Ulster Boces from over the bridge. They really want to help you succeed, and they have a high NCLEX pass rate, where Dutchess does not. Best of luck.

Does anyone know what the bridge program entails? Do we just do nursing courses or will we be responsible for taking more A&P or Microbiology? I got accepted into jan2012 at Boces, but was thinking of waiting until Sept for family reasons. I would like to do any classes at Dutchess meanwhile if I will need any for the bridge. Thanks.

I have heard the nursing instructors at Columbia-Greene community College are very supportive. LPN's can bridge into the program by skipping The 1st or the 1st & 2nd semester by testing out. Getting into Columbia-Greene is VERY competitve - those with the highest grades are taken in.
