how many of you have found laptops beneficial during your nursing classes, especially lecture? i have a laptop already, but i am looking into buying an additional one except it'll be smaller and lightweight for school. i don't start my classes for the BSN program until january, so i'm not sure how much i'll be using it quite yet. i have a feeling that i'll be in dire need for a convenient one once it begins...thanks in advance

100% YES! Not only nursing classes, but especially my electives.

1. I can type FAR faster than I can write notes, so when I leave class I have more comprehensive & useful notes to study from.

2. With wireless internet on my laptop, and throughout my school, if the teacher mentions a concept that i've never heard of before or uses a word I don't understand I can look it up really quick. Profs aren't always willing to stop their lectures to answer questions.

3. You can surf AllNurses during the breaktime!

I love having my laptop for classes, and can't believe I waited so long before buying one for school. If I had known, I would never have bought a desktop when I started university. If you can afford it, definitely get a laptop for classes. And if you can get a lightweight laptop, you'll hardly notice the weight in your backpack.

That is a great idea, I was thinking about getting the Sony laptop for medical surgical. I want to buy the memory pen stick with at least 1 GB, so I can store all my information.

I would say, go for it!!!

I'm in an ASN program, and there's not one person in our class of 30+ who uses one in class.

I am in a RN-BSN program. I take my notes on a laptop called the tablet. I find it VERY helpful

I have used my Macbook for my Sociology class. But I will admit I only did it in that class because I saw one other girl who brought hers in. No other classes have I seen laptops. I wasn't sure if it was because they aren't allowed or what. So I only bring it to that class because I know they are definitely allowed. And like someone else said, the internet definitely helps if you don't know something! I type so much faster and I write REALLY slow (I have dyslexia.) and awkwardly and it takes me forever to write them, but so much faster to type! So I have done this in one class, but it is not a nursing class because I haven't taken them yet :) Besides as much as I'm on this computer it would make sense to have school material on it!

They frown on using laptops at my school because they're afraid we'll be doing something else besides taking notes.

what kind of tablet do you have? what do you like/dislike about it? what kind of memory/hard drive space does it have? i'm thinking about getting one of these when i start taking classes again.

We have a few people in my class who use laptops. I also have one and find it of no use at all during lectures but that is just me.

I always just print off the power point before class and I take notes on that.

It just depends on your school.

The responses here are all very interesting to me. The school I am hoping to attend REQUIRES a laptop---more specifically one that is designed especially for the program....Now I'm wondering what it will end up being and why we need one!

I learn better by writing than by typing, so a laptop wouldn't work for me at all. I knew a kid in my undergrad program who took notes on his PDA (he had a full-sized keyboard for it) but I'd probably not benefit much from that either.

I'm the only one in my class who uses a laptop. A lot of newer laptops come with Microsoft OneNote. It's a program specifically for taking notes. I love it because I can drag pictures and text into it from the web, or powerpoint lectures, etc. (It would be a lot more useful if our crappy campus had Wi-fi.) Search functions make it easier to find things in the notes later. I've been able to create some great study guides that have helped my classmates with it.

I also type much faster than I write, so that's a bonus too.
