Nursing Students School Programs

Hello all,

There are not very many topics posted regarding KCMA so I thought I would start a new post. I plan on starting the Pre-Licensure program in the fall and I would greatly appreciate any insight on current/past students' words of advice or general thoughts about the program. I'd also love to meet anyone else who plans to start FA 2014 as well.

Looking forward to hearing from as many as possible!

Thanks!

I am starting my senior year as a nursing student at Kettering this fall! Kettering like many other nursing schools is very tough. If you are starting the gen ed classes you need a high GPA to get into the program. When signing up for classes they will give you a track, either A or B. I would recommend asking to get into the track that does not have (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES IN PUBLIC THAT CAN IDENTIFY ANYONE IN YOUR PROGRAM PER TERMS OF SERVICE) teaching Anatomy. (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES IN PUBLIC THAT CAN IDENTIFY ANYONE IN YOUR PROGRAM PER TERMS OF SERVICE) is a lot harder than the other instructor (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES IN PUBLIC THAT CAN IDENTIFY ANYONE IN YOUR PROGRAM PER TERMS OF SERVICE). Your grades are compared to the other students in the program so taken her will get you a better GPA. Do you have any questions?

So what did you think of the program? Any other tips? , books I shouldn't live without? I've already taken all the pre-req courses (this is my second degree). I'm starting straight into year 2 of the program in the fall.

The books for fundamentals are different for your class, but we still use our concept books from fundamentals and they are important in the program. The laboratory and physical assessment books I have never used, you could go without those. All of the assigned books are on reserve in the library, so you can read them there. For every nursing class we get an ATI book and most people read out of those. Honestly, I did not read the health promotion book or the religion books except The Shack. For Wellness they did take some questions our of the CREATION book. You can't really avoid any teachers because you don't have a choice for the nursing classes. (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES IN PUBLIC THAT CAN IDENTIFY ANYONE IN YOUR PROGRAM PER TERMS OF SERVICE) for Fundamentals is awesome! For religion I would avoid (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES IN PUBLIC THAT CAN IDENTIFY ANYONE IN YOUR PROGRAM PER TERMS OF SERVICE). I had (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES IN PUBLIC THAT CAN IDENTIFY ANYONE IN YOUR PROGRAM PER TERMS OF SERVICE) during the summer semester, he never entered any grades into the grade book and just gave us all a final grade. (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES IN PUBLIC THAT CAN IDENTIFY ANYONE IN YOUR PROGRAM PER TERMS OF SERVICE) grades very easily but he's classes are boring. (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES IN PUBLIC THAT CAN IDENTIFY ANYONE IN YOUR PROGRAM PER TERMS OF SERVICE) seems to have many clinical sites for us that are better than other schools in the area. The program is accelerated so you need to take time out of class to learn the concept and apply them to NCLEX style questions.

Jmitch, you are AWESOME. Thank you soo much for your insight and general feedback. I really appreciate it! I know you still have a year to go, but do you think the program has been doing a good job of preparing you for both the NCLEX and your nursing career. Again, thanks a ton for your help.

In the fall I am taking our med surg class, so I hope to feel more prepared after this class. I believe that (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES IN PUBLIC THAT CAN IDENTIFY ANYONE IN YOUR PROGRAM PER TERMS OF SERVICE) last class to take the NCLEX had a pass rate of 97%. (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES IN PUBLIC THAT CAN IDENTIFY ANYONE IN YOUR PROGRAM PER TERMS OF SERVICE) does not let students graduate or pass classes that will not pass the NCLEX. To be able to graduate you have to pass the ATI NCLEX predictor test. After taking the review session and retaking the test you can then graduate. We will be prepared for our nursing career after having two preceptorship rotations. You are able to request your site and I have heard of many students getting hired on by their preceptorship units.

Sweet.

Is there anything I could do to prepare myself for my first semester? I'm excited to get started and I want to do everything I can to be prepared. Also, so you know of any scholarship opportunities? I'm all set for fall and winter semesters, but summer semesters will be entirely out of pocket for so I'm a bit worried.

The only scholarships that I know about are for first time college students. Are you saying that you are not set because federal loans do not cover summer? I was told that they would not cover the summer semester but they ended up giving me federal loans for the summer semesters. The nursing department sends out a long list of reading assignments and other information to complete before orientation. Make sure you bring something to take notes during department orientation day because they started lecturing on content that day and I was not prepared for that! First semester is focused on physical assessments, vital signs, and learning the basics of nursings. They made it a point to know all of our med term before nursing school. I can send you the med term list if you want it.
