Job outlook for new RN grads in BayArea

Hi everyone,

I will be starting a BSN program in the bay area come Fall 2015. Have been hearing/reading horror stories from new grads regarding their experience finding themselves a job after nursing school. Ofcourse, some of these information dates way back in years.

How are job prospects currently? Hope recent grads can share their experience and give some guidelines to a nurse student who will be finding her/him self looking for a job in Bay Area hospitals from couple of years down the road.

Hi there!

So just to be completely clear, I live and work in Florida, but I lived in the Bay Area for 20 years and know many nurses who studied there.

If you want the honest truth from what I've been hearing, the job prospects in the Bay are not pretty. Every single one of my friends who have studied nursing is unemployed right now. Some of them have been actively searching for a nursing job in Cali for over a year. The only friends I have who successfully got employed as RNs traveled out of state. I'm sorry to be a Debbie Downer :(

We hear this often. Everybody wants to go to CA, and the cost of living is so high that more experienced nurses are not able to decrease hours or quit. New grads are usually the bottom of the list for vacancies and many are still looking for their first jobs 12-18 months post graduation. There are hundreds of apps for each opening.

Plan to move out of state, preferably to an undeserved area where they really want and need you.

There is a facebook group you can join for Bay Area new grad RNs that you can become a member of and see for yourself. Every other day someone is posting how hard it is to find a job or tips for finding a job in the Bay Area but warning it can get pretty depressing at times! Haha especially when you see someone got the job you applied for ;) But it's a good resource nonetheless.

I graduated in 2011. It was very difficult to find a job after graduation. It took me almost a year to find a job in California. It is possible to find a new grad job but it is hard and will take some time.
