Most financial experts recommend that your student loans never be greater than the yearly salary you can reasonably expect to make during the first year after graduation. I would use that guideline -- or stay VERY close to it.

Salaries vary from region to region. Check out the new grad salaries in the region where you plan to work after graduation ... and let that be your guide as to a maximum figure to start with.

But don't forget to factor in any special circumstances. For example, if you think you might not work full time, or that you will take time off to have kids, etc. you need to factor that in.

I have a degree in another field, and I'm paying as I go for my ADN program. Hopefully I will not accrue any debt when I get my BSN (or will keep it below $5K), as I hope to take advantage of an employer's tuition benefit as well as a BSN program that will give me maximum credit for the courses I took for my other bachelor's. Here's hoping!
