I received an email for invitation to HonorSociety.org today. Has anyone joined this organization? I posted this in pre-nursing as well just to get some feedback. They say it's invitation only and members are picked by their grades and class rank or faculty members.

If it is based on transcripts your school presented them, and is free, then that is one thing. But if they are looking for a fee I would suspect it is just a way to make some bucks off your ego. The National Honor Society, the Nursing Honor Society and Sigma Theta Tau are the tried and true societies. They serve you, not the other way around.

If you are in a 2 year junior college, the invitation should be from your local Phi Theta Kappa chapter, which is the nationally recognized honor society of 2 year colleges. Their website is PTK.org, so I'm guessing this email you received could possibly be spam.

It is spam. I went to put my name and address in and the next screen was for $50 fee. Uhm, no thank you! lol

At least you realized before getting duped....others may not be so lucky.

the .org is misleading though, too bad the .org isn't regulated as intended for not-for-profit organizations...

Your local PTK chapter would have mailed you a letter inviting you to join, so you were right to not proceed further. Definitely spam!

Ptk is an international honors society for junior colleges. It does require a fee but is a very tried an true one as well. It is invite only and your teachers and transcripts get you in. They offer a ton of scholarships including a nursing scholarship. If you get an invite from them, pay the fee and join. It looks great on your transcript especially if you plan on transferring to further your education. It has helped me out a lot financially so far!
