What do you guys think of this test question

A client's results on his Hgb a1c are an 8. As the nurse what would you evaluate with the client concerning this score

a. what had for breakfast before he had his blood drawn

b. recent illness

c. wounds or injuries

d. dont remember this answer but it is irrelevant anyway.

I just want to see what answer you guys rationalize out of this test question, before I decide to expend a lot of time and energy trying to research the answer for that dang point.

Since Hgb A1c is a test to monitor the span of a RBC, aka 120 days, I would narrow it down to B or C. However I agree with daytonite that recent should knock this one out. Wound and injuries would be my guess. I really do not like the question.

It will be interesting to know the anwser and understand the rationale. i have learned that finding out the answer is not the most important part but understanding the rationale is. When I go home from taking test, I always look up the question that I really did not know. It can be hard to remember them so I try to write them down after the test. This way I can learn the rationale. Also I learn best by exposure to the material. Seeing the information again will hopefully make it stay for nclex-time. :specs:

As a professor, I think this is a LOUSY test question. Even those of us who well understand the test and its uses aren't sure what the professor is looking for.

I will absolutely go along with that! :yeah:

Thanks. I figure if I can't tell what the answer is, it's not reasonable to expect a student to know it -- unless this question relates to something particular that the instructor emphasized in class and the purpose of the question is to see if the students were paying attention to that particular thing.

I've got a PhD in nursing. I've published a research article related to insulin administration ... and, oh yeah, I have diabetes and monitor my blood glucose twice a day and get my HbA1c levels drawn q 3 months!

i would eliminate choice a. then choice b and choice c are 50/50 for me. but i am leaning towards choice c because i don't like the word "recent" because we are talking about how the patient's blood glucose was for the last 3 months.

you probably got this question wrong and you want to challenge it? i hope this question gets thrown out because it is not a "fair" question.

you will tell us the professor's answer, right??

I would go with C, with B as a very close second but I agree that the term "recent" can mean different things to different people.
