group work fear

i know this might sound totally irrational, but i can't help it, so here goes. i absolutely HATE the thought of having group assignments/projects in nursing school. did any of you have to do these?? my whole life, i've always made straight A's and been very dedicated in school. even in junior high and highschool, i hated group work because i somehow always ended up being the one who got stuck doing everything, and taking up my partners' slack. my other classmates loved group stuff, because they got to socialize and could put some of the work off on others. any group assignment stressed me out, and my classmates always wanted to be in my group because they knew things would get done, and get done well. however, now that i'm about to start nursing school, i'm terrified at the thought of my grades on anything being in ANY way dependent on anyone else. i don't like doing group work, period. i want my grade to reflect what i did, and if i don't do well, i want myself to be the only one to blame. i get very nervous when i'm relying on anyone else to come through for anything. i would really rather just do it myself, because i know it will get done. plus, i can do it on my own time. please let me know if any of you had experiences with group work, or if everything was pretty much individual. thanks! :)

It sounds like you have a good plan and I applaud your efforts to make a good living for yourself and your child. However, I do think it's a little naive of you to get on a website for nurses and expect support when you have no interest in becoming a nurse but only want to use the degree to get somewhere else.

You accuse nurses of being small-minded concerning your goals, but there is a nursing shortage and applicants out there who want to be bedside nurses. (Of course, I'm no one to talk, because I'm not sure how long I'll be at the bedside myself -- but at least I see how this might irritate nurses in the trenches!)

I don't think group work will signficantly impact your GPA. Good luck.

well i never called NURSES small-minded... i was speaking of certain people. and i never came on this website looking for support about my career choice as a PA, i came on here making an innocent post asking for people's EXPERIENCES with group work. not for people's views on what i want to do with my life, and why it's incorrect. i would rather have never brought up the whole PA thing. so i'm done with this thread...it's turned into me just having to justify/defend myself and what i want to do, when that was never the topic of the post. but thank you for wishing me luck.. and good luck to you as well!

You have to start standing up for yourself, get a backbone, but you have too sometimes in NS do group stuff

everytime i read one of your posts, i have to comment out loud just how cool and levelheaded you appear here. i would not only want you as my nurse, i would want you as a friend!!!! you truly are a well-spoken person! the OP should block out all the rest of this blah-blah-blah and just read your post!!!:balloons:

I wrote her a PM...turns out she was feeling rather attacked and chose to try to stay away....I know how she feels...I posted what I thought was an innocent question that was information I had received from an RN and wanted some clarification or other thoughts, and felt totally attacked about everything but the subject I brought up....I finally asked a moderator to remove the post....it's kind of strange how that happens....

I wouldn't take the lack of a reply personal.....

Thank you....I was wondering if her question was getting buried; I guess it was. Hopefully she will see that this situation is not only surmountable, but might just work to her benefit. Hard as it is to see that now, of course!

Never? In anything? Have you finished your program?

If so, that's remarkable. I hadn't come across any that didn't have you collaborating on a case study, or ethics assignment, or presentation of SOME type. Very unusual.
